MURIEL HOGAN DINSMORE Muriel Hogan Dinsmore 1929-2018, age 89 passed away quietly in her sleep surrounded by her family on Tuesday October 16, 2018 in Petaluma, CA. She was born in Eureka on May 1,1929 and was raised and spent her entire adult life in Humboldt County. Her parents were Oscar and Anne Hogan and they along with her brother Alden settled in Rio Dell where she went to elementary school and graduated from Fortuna High School in 1947. She went on to and graduated from Humboldt State University with a B.A. in Business Administration and 40 years later taking one class a semester for six years received a M.A. in Education/Human Resources from HSU in 1992. In June 1955 she married George Dinsmore and they moved to Fortuna before heading to Eureka in 1969 with their four children where she stayed and then moving in 2010 to the retirement community SpringField Place in Petaluma. Her life she always said was involved around six activities/jobs. First, devoted wife to her late husband George and avid supporter of their four children Sam, Jeff, Tamara and Scot; Day jobs including -Secretary to the late Dr. Homer Balabanis then HSU Vice President, Accountant for Gene Lucas, CPA, Writer and Editor of the 'Accent on People Section' for the Times-Standard (1970-80), Director of CR Public Affairs/Foundation Office (1980-1995) and following her retirement, a Professional Volunteer-in Arts, Culture and Historic Architecture. During her lifetime with her generous and unselfish style she touched many lives reaching out and connecting with people from all walks of life. Muriel loved being around people looking to always find a way to encourage the person to move forward with a phone call or a note by mail. Her ability to always get things done and never willing to accept NO to a challenge or an opportunity and above all looking for the best in other people and giving the best she had. She was a visionary in Humboldt County by being one of the original founders of the Fortuna Arts Council in 1966 and with the late Mayor Gil Trood and others they helped establish the Humboldt Arts Council in 1972. Her years of giving back to the community did not go unnoticed as she was recognized for numerous awards based on her involvement with organizations tied to the Arts, Culture and Education of Humboldt County. During her time at the Times-Standard she won both state and national awards including a Historic Preservation Media Award. She was a Founding Member, Past-President and Emeritus Board Member of Humboldt Arts Council and twice recipient of its Contribution to the Arts Award. She was a Founding Member and Past President of the CR Foundation League and Eureka Heritage Society, from which she received a Preservation Award in 1996. Muriel was Past President of AAUW, PEO and University Women Chapters in Humboldt County. She twice received the AAUW Women of Achievement Award, the League of Women Voter's Significant Contribution award in 2002 and in 2004 she was recognized by Soroptimist International's Chapter as a Woman of Distinction. In 2007 she was selected to the Humboldt State University Alumni and in 2010 she received the Humboldt County Republican of the Year award. Signature events of which she loved to be involved with were the CR Rummage Sale for student scholarships (CR Foundation League) and the Annual Home Tour Event which displayed historic structures in Humboldt County (Eureka Heritage Society). Most important was the monthly Arts Alive on Saturday night at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. In addition, she was also a current member of the Ingomar Club and past member of the Rotary Club of Old Town Eureka. I only met Muriel about 10 years ago while working at CR. Even so, she always recognized me when I'd see her at the Home Tours! She knew so many people and I was very proud that she included me in her vast number of friends. It was an honor to know her, and I will miss her very much. She's one of the grand persons of the ages...

Muriel was my supervisor at College of the Redwoods from 1980 to 1982. She was a wonderful person and a great supporter of the Arts. She had a wonderful smile and I will always remember her juggling 5 jobs at once. She was a very kind person and I will always think of her fondly and miss her.Judy Bardella Bailey

Dinsmore Family

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night,
But ah, my foes, and oh my friends,
It gives a lovely light!

That's how I remember Muriel, a lovely light.

Some people only bring light. Muriel was certainly one of them. We are all richer for having met her.

Your Mother was very special. When our Mother, Jan, was suffering from a debilitating illness your Mom would often arrive with a special arrangement or other treat to cheer Mom up.

She was also very kind to me, including me in events and always saying hello.

I will remember her well.

Dear Sam and all of the Dinsmore family.
I so appreciate you lettting me know of Muriel's passing.
She will be missed by so many people.
Muriel was probably the first person I met when Cedric and I and our 3 sons arrived in Eureka. She was so welcoming and such a lifesaver for
Cedric and for me in those early days. Cedric appreciated and depended on her for "all things social" and she shepherded me in so many ways.
She was a special person and a wonderful friend and supporter for both of us. I think of her fondly as the welcoming face of Eureka. She is greatly missed and will be remembered by all of the Sampson family as a guiding light for our years in Humboldt County.

Dear Dinsmore Family:

I was startled that Muriel gave a Petaluma address in her remarks for my old art teacher a week ago. But i am glad to see she had a daughter in Petaluma.

Muriel and I may have gotten to know each other in the 19060's, when we were active in DeMolay and Job's Daughters.

She was great help to Eureka and Humboldt Bay area and it will be hard for anyone to replace her.

I'm sure many people liked her and even more appreciated her work for the community. God bless her.

To Muriel's Family- There are truly no words to describe what a Classy Lady she was in all ways. Whenever I had a problem that I was struggling with my thought was "how would Muriel handle this?" I was so proud to be friends these many years.

Muriel was an amazing woman and a big influence in my life. She set an example with her kindness, generosity, encouragement and curiosity. I grew up in Fortuna next door to the Dinsmore family and Muriel made sure I was always included and treated me like one of her own children. I will always carry her memory with a smile on my face. Much love to Sam, Jeff, Tamra & Scot.

To Muriel's family, my husband and I often visited with Muriel in Petaluma as we traveled between SF and Eureka. She always thanked us for taking the time to see her if for only 30 minutes or so. We revisited our times together at CR, I was one of her student assistants. Our latest recent visit will be fondly remembered. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

To Muriel's Family, I was so sorry to read of Muriel's passing. She was a dear lady I met when I was her hairdresser some years ago. I knew she had a lot of irons in the fire but I had no idea how many. For someone that busy her manner was always calm. Fortunately, I saw her some of the times she came up after moving, she never changed. I'm very sorry that I won't be able to attend her memorial as I will be helping another dear lady celebrate her 100th birthday on that day and time. My heartfelt sympathy and best wishes to you all.

Dear Tamara, Sam, Jeff, & Scot:

Linda and I were deeply saddened to learn of your mother Muriel's passing. Always a 'community treasure', her legacy, uniqueness, and contributions to so many of our local businesses and community groups and organizations will live on in the hearts and minds of many of us throughout Humboldt County. We have missed Muriel's regular presence these past few years and will forever appreciate what she has given to our community, a community which she loved and of which she was such a vital part. May she rest in peace.

Please accept our deepest and most sincere sympathy. You will remain in out thoughts and prayers at this time of loss.

Sincerely,

Louis & Linda Bucher
