I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Bill just before his passing. He found him to be a delightful, interesting and intelligent man. I just recently found 3 books, 1 of them signed, that he gifted me just days before he left us. I hope he knew how much I enjoyed our chats.

Me and my family had the honorable pleasure to meet Mr. Bill Carroll on a Carnival Cruise in 2010. We dined with him everyday on the Cruise. We became pen pals and sent messages and cards back and forth for a few years. My children still ask about him. He sent me his photo book of Norma Jean. He will be missed.

Bill's passing brings a real sadness into our lives but offers an opportunity to reminisce on the things we did together: traveling on the canals in England for 2 weeks and over 100 miles, working together to put on a magnificent all Imperial car show at the Queen Mary in Long Beach and being invited to travel on a trip to New Zealand that he planned and organized for his Mensa group. The loss of Bill leaves not only a sadness, but the disappointment that we can no longer experience his humor, his intellect or our visits with him. He was a fascinating man and he spelled it all out in his autobiography "The Unknown Man".

I have tried to make an entry several times on this site without success. Too bad- Bill was such a neat guy. Knew him some 25 years. If this gets published, I'll write something meaningful.

Just picked up his Aventura book at a thrift store yesterday. Already hooked and wanting to head South. All condolences to family. I really wish I could have known him.

Bill was brilliant and ornery to the end. I wish I had half his intelligence and wit. As a product of the depression, he was as tight as can be, and as generous as anyone I've known. And fiercely independent. When he was about 94 I suggested that he'd someday grown "old" and need an obituary and I was willing to do that but needed some help. Within a year he cranked out an incredibly readable biography that even people who didn't know him would enjoy reading. A brilliant man and adventurer.

Oh Bill! I have cried many tears for you today. You were one in a million, a true gentleman and inspiration. I will never forget you. Say hi to Marilyn for me. Xxx

Bill was an inspiring human being...following his heart and dreams with an adventurous spirit, humor, and kindness that is remarkable. He had endless stories of his travels and the many people he met, the ones who meant much to him, who had something to offer in the telling of their stories, but it was Bill who was the unforgettable one! Thank you Bill. You lived many more lives than most of us. I hope you are enjoying your new adventure.
With much adoration,

Bill Carroll did a lot for the town of San Marcos, CA. He was editor of our local newspaper, served on the School Board and wrote a history book about San Marcos. He was a delightful and colorful person. We are so glad to have reconnected with him in the last few years through Mimi Kennedy, a San Marcos Historical Society Board member, whose daughter also lives in McKinnleybille. We are grateful for the many donations and contributions he made to the San Marcos Historical Society and to the greater community. Our sincere condolences to his family members. We are so saddened by the loss of Bill. He was a great inspiration to both my husband and me. We consider ourselves very lucky to have not only worked with him but to have become his friends.
