WILLIAM MCWHORTER Obituary

WILLIAM "BILL" ROBERT MCWHORTER "We are a product of the landscape around us. We are made from the dust of whatever place we are born, and our souls remember that, though our minds may forget" - William "Bill" Robert McWhorter. Bill, 67, a resident of Elkins, died peacefully at home Tuesday, April 5, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. He was born Wednesday, December 22, 1948 in Fairmont, WV, and educated in public schools in Beckley and Fairmont. His higher education began at Fairmont State College but was interrupted by the Vietnam War. He served with the U.S. Army 29th Artillery in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1971. Bill went on to obtain a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Humboldt State University in California. There he met Suzanne "Sam" Bowyer and the two were married February 14, 1989 on Trinidad Head in Trinidad, CA. Sam survives in Elkins. Art was Bill's passion; music, theatre, and especially painting. In California, he was a part of the Humboldt Harmonaires, an a cappella Barbershop Chorus, and participated in local theater. In Elkins, Bill was a favorite entertainer of the Elkins Area Community Theater and sang with the First Baptist and First United Methodist Choirs. Many will remember his Easter performances at the Methodist church and his dramatic readings of How the Grinch Stole Christmas at Midland Elementary. An avid painter, his works were featured in galleries across the country and received Best in Show, special merits, and numerous awards. His paintings were frequently shown at Tamarack in Beckley, West Virginia, where a permanent installation still resides. Bill said of his art, "My paintings come from nature, memory, and imagination. They also come from nowhere... Painting is a matter of drawing with color. I identify the colors and arrange them in accord with relationships I see in nature Some of us have a skill for manipulating and articulating those relationships, and when we occasionally get it right, we manage to assemble those elements into something beautiful and true." Bill was a co-founder of the local Artists at Work cooperative gallery in 1993. He was an original Artist in Residence and instructor for ArtsBank, Inc., a non-profit program providing in-depth artistic experiences for the youth of Randolph County. He was appointed coordinator of ArtsBank in 2007. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Egbert Ewing McWhorter and Polly Ann Harler McWhorter and sister, Barbara Bennett. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne "Sam", of Elkins, and his children, Eli Madison McWhorter of Huntington and Willa Rose Logan McWhorter of Morgantown. Also left to cherish his memory are three siblings, Patricia Cooke (Harry) of Salisbury, NC, Nancy Pomeroy (Rick) of Ice Mountain, and Richard McWhorter (Ann) of Huntington, and several nieces and nephews. Bill's request for cremation was honored and a memorial service will be held at the Randolph County Community Arts Center Saturday, May 7th, 2016 from 2-4 PM. The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for William Robert McWhorter. Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com. Bill was my uncle, only ten years older than myself. While he served in Viet Nam I plastered my walls with his art. I'm sure the pin-holes in the corners cost him thousands of dollars.

He was a friendly and fun uncle who tortured me gloriously.

He and my brother are painfully missed.

To Sam and your community and family,

I know Sam from a poetry class at HSU and didn't meet Bill. I was happy she and Bill found each other and that they followed their hearts back to WV.

Please accept my deepest condolences and love. I hope to see Sam and her family when she comes back to Humboldt County.

We didn't know Bill personally but of him, through Sam. My wife Meredith and I were friends with our 'star' Sam from the Eatery in Trinidad, and we were so happy that she found such a wonderful man. We lost touch after their move to Elkins but remembered them occasionally throughout the years. Meredith is recently passed so for both of us, ... I send our love and respects to Sam and the children with good wishes to each of you as you continue on your path together with good memories of father Bill nourished by his love for you.

Bill and I were close friends. He and I were roommates for nearly two years in the early seventies in Eureka. Such a sweet guy. We had a lot of fun. He was very easy to talk to.

When I moved away south, he gifted me with a beautiful oil (I had told him it was one of my favorites). He painted a lot out of our apartment on 5th and A. I remember chatting with him as he stretched canvases and applied the gesso. I still have them, too.

Sad news to hear he passed. Good memories.

Bill loved the northern California landscapes, as this was where his pastels and oils first started to show those beautiful clouds, he continued to paint landscapes that were reminiscent of the beautiful skies there as well as blending into scenes of West Virginia. he touched many lives with his gentle spirit and his skills brought art into the schools here in WV. Our children and I plan to come to Humboldt and share some of his ashes with the earth and sky of his long time home.
he will be missed by his family and all those that knew him.

One of my most admired and treasured paintings is one I bought long ago from Atley Gallery in Old Town Eureka when Bill McWhorter was showing there. It's called Pacific Nocturne - a beautiful ocean landscape just after sundown when a soft yellow glow lingers on the horizon, caught in layers of shape shifting shades of Blue. Cloud Sky Water Sand. It's a stunning painting and stops everyone in their tracks when coming into the room. I think it is Clam Beach. I've seen the sky this way many evenings in Humboldt. Now there seems to be a melancholy I never saw before. I think it is because I know the painter has passed. I am grateful he passed this way first.
I hope his death was a gentle next step.
