Rick Hube Obituary

LONDONDERRY - State Rep. Rick Hube of Londonderry, who addressed Vermont's problems and legislative issues with the passion of an advocate and the patience of a statesman, died unexpectedly Dec. 21, 2009, while visiting family in Florida. He was 62.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Rick earned a BA in history at Colgate University in 1970 and began his career as a management trainee for the McDonald's Corp., where he worked his way up to managing the chain's second busiest restaurant in Connecticut.

He relocated to Vermont in 1978, working first at the Stratton Mountain golf course and spending one winter on the Stratton Ski Patrol. In 1980, he was promoted to personnel director at Stratton and held the same position with Stratton's sister ski area, Bromley Mountain. Rick subsequently held a variety of management positions at Stratton, including marketing manager, director of recreation and lodging director. In 1990, he started Hube, Inc., a property management firm.

Rick enjoyed politics and ran for office on the Republican ticket for the Vermont House of Representatives in 1999. After being elected he later wrote in a report to constituents how he felt a sense of "awe and respect" for the men and women who had done the "people's business" over the past two centuries, putting people and principle above partisanship and personal agendas. The same leadership qualities that moved him quickly through the ranks of business also served him well in the Legislature, where he was appointed to the House Commerce, Judiciary, Government Operations, Rules, and Ways & Means Committees, the House-Senate Joint Rules Committee, and the Joint Fiscal Committee.

He also served as the House Majority Whip, as vice chair of the Government Operations Committee and was elected by his legislative peers to the University of Vermont Board of Trustees. In 2008, he served as Vice-Chair of Senator John McCain's presidential campaign in Vermont. At home, he was a trustee of the Chapel of the Snows and a founding board member of the Stratton Foundation.

Rick is survived by his sister Jane and husband James W. Louttit, M.D. of Maitland, Florida, his niece Lisa, of New York City and his nephew Jay, wife Margaret and their son William of Carrollton, Georgia. Rick was predeceased by his father, Richard W. Hube Sr., his mother, Elizabeth H. Hube and his younger sister Elizabeth M. Hube.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 1 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Farmington, Conn. He will be interred in the Memorial Garden at St. James with his parents and sister. A Celebration of his life will be held in Vermont on Sunday, Jan. 31st, which is Rick's birthday. It will be held at 2 p.m. at the Burtscher Fieldhouse at Stratton Mountain School in Stratton. Further details, including directions can be found on his website, www.rickhube.com.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Friends Hut, 210 South Galena, Aspen, Colorado 81611. This hut was built in memory of Rick's sister Betsey and nine others who perished in an airplane accident in 1980. Memorial contributions may also be made in Rick's name to a Vermont charity of choice in keeping with the causes Rick supported. In this way, we will uphold Rick's love for the State of Vermont, his district, and especially the people of Vermont.

Dear Jane. I first met Rick 30 years ago when he came to Stratton. He worked for my father Casey Rowley. We become friends instantly. I was on ski patrol with him his one and only year. Our first event was to take the ambulance and pick up a man who was sick. Oh my god it was like the blind leading the blind. We did not have a clue. We finally got the man loaded and Rick had to have the lights on siren on and drive fast. Iwas in the back getting sick from all the motion. Rick was my buddy he supported me in all my fundraising events and also called to see what he could do always trying to give me more money for the event. He always left messages asking about all my family. He played golf with my father alot and my dad was always on him to get the road paved in front of there house on main street it was very rough. My father never let up on him about it. One day dad got a phone call and said Casey look out your dam window the pavers will be there. He always kept is word. I will miss him more then I can bear. I will have his voice always in my head and his laugh. Sorry I did not speak to you at the service but my prayers are with you and all the family. My love SUSIE ROWLEY WYMAN

To the family of Rick Hube - After attending the memorial service for Rick yesterday - we truly realized just how special a person he really was. His Wit, Charm and his love of Pranks (he would of fit right in with our family) was a side of Rick that I wish we had been able to experiance. Even thought we were neighbors, we never really got to see much of him with both of our busy schedules. But by working for him, we truly knew he was a great person. We want to thank you for allowing us to help with the setting up of the hall for the service. It made us feel that we had finally done something special for Rick and made us a part of this special day. We will miss him a lot and his constant smile when ever we saw him. Thank you..

To Jane and family - Ron's and my thoughts are with you and your family at this very sad time. We have had the fortunate opportunity to have been able to work for Rick for a number of years - have numerous chats with him and everytime I have called him regarding some issue, he has always been there to respond to us. He was the best!!!! We will all miss him a lot and every time we drive by his house, lots of memories flow by in our minds. We recently met with Rick at his house after all of his new work had been finished and he showed us just how he wanted his driveway plowed this year...It was so great to chat and see him enjoying showing off his new landscaping and work that was done at his home. We will miss his concerns and chats for all of us in this area.

Please know that your family and Rick have been much in my thoughts over the last few weeks. For each of the last six years, Rick has visited my fourth grade classroom to talk about his work in the legislature. His ability to connect with my students at their interest level was impressive and heightened the children's anticipation of their field trip to the State House even more. Knowing they'd be greeted personally by Rick, ushered into Governor Douglas' office by Rick, and introduced on the floor of the House by Rick made them feel welcome and important. I'm sorry that this year Londonderry's fourth graders will not have this important and enriching experience. I will miss him.

Rick helped my parents quickly and with respect. He also was very informative and respected by the Flood Brook School when ever we visited Montpelier. He will be missed.
