BRADFORD - Tragedy struck June 19, 2009. While on his way to Burlington to help coach yet another AAU practice, George Edward Huntington, 68, died in a car accident. He was born Sept. 5, 1940, the son of Wanda (Champagne) and George C. Huntington.
He graduated from Bradford Academy in 1958 having accomplished legendary feats in athletics, namely basketball. His high school career ended with leading his team to a Class L State Championship against Ludlow scoring over 40 points. He set a new state record with 47 points scored in one game. By the end of his career, he had yet another state record, having scored 1,935 points, a record that held for nearly 25 years. Mind you, this was back when the schedules were typically 14 games and play was with a running clock and no three point shots.
He spent the coming years as follows: 1960-1962 Played professional baseball for Milwaukee Braves; 1960-1964 Plymouth State - B.S. in physical education; 1963 Married his high school sweetheart, Donna Drew of Piermont, N.H.; 1963-1965 Lions Youth Sports; 1963-1967 played professional baseball club, Coaticook, Quebec, earned an MVP Award, and was the manager in 1964; 1965-1968 assistant scout for St. Louis Cardinals; 1965-1968 assistant baseball coach Ball State University; 1964-1967 director of health and physical education, head coach varsity basketball, baseball, soccer, track and field, gymnastics for Orleans High School; 1967 director of Headstart for the Northeast Kingdom; 1967-1968 Ball State University - Graduate Assistanceship/ M.S. Physical Education; 1967 - 1972 assistant professor/Head Coach Basketball and Baseball, Lyndon State College; 1972-2009 His pilgrimage back to Bradford began during the time he was teaching and coaching at Lyndon State College. He would spend his weekends and holidays working and coaching Bradford Youths Sports in Bradford where he subsequently committed the rest of his life to raising his family, youth sports and to the growth of his beloved hometown. His passion for community service and business grew dramatically from his love to teach and help others. His business career started in Bradford when he purchased his first piece of property which he renovated and began running a residential care home for the elderly with his mother.
There was nothing George loved more than spending time with his children and grandchildren. The void created by his absence will never be replaced. The hearts of all who knew him will forever ache. He is survived by his brothers Henry and Hollis Huntington. His four children: Ron and Randall Huntington, Jade and Jeff Strohm and her children, Sydney, 7, and twins Rylee and Jordin, 23 months, and lastly, Jasmyn and Marc Monroe, who will welcome another Huntington child in early August.
Services will be held at Hales Funeral Home in Bradford. The viewing will be Friday the 26th from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday the 27th at 11 a.m. in the Oxbow Gymnasium. Reception to follow at the Oxbow Cafeteria.

To the Hunting family. I would like to extend my heart felt condolences to all. I learned a lot from coach Huntington in the short time that I played basketball and studied in his classes while attending Lyndon State College. Even though we didn't have any contact, he remained in my heart. I will miss him very much.

Dear Ron, Randy, Jade and Jasmine....I could always call George when I had a problem and he would quickly sort it out have the answer. The best day of my life was spent with George, climbing the mountain above the maple syrup camp....the quiet beauty shared with a dear friend. I will never forget him. May God comfort all who grieve.

Dear Ron,Randy, Jade and Jasmyn,
I just learned of your Dad's passing from my Mom this afternoon and the sky is crying down here in Texas tonight.
I can't think of anyone who loved Bradford and it's people more than he did.......,except maybe my grandfather, John.....-:).
But no one has been more generous or passionate, or given more of their time and resources to the people and children of Bradford and beyond than your Dad.
As sad as I feel, thinking about George puts a smile on my face. He was, as you know, quite a character and a great and devoted friend to our family.
My heart goes out to you all, and especially on the heels of losing your Mom so tragically. For all of his accomplishments, you were the Crown Jewels in his cap. Take good care of each other and know that you are in the hearts and prayers of a multitude of folks. God Bless! Julie Pratt Morgan

To the Huntington Family
I was so sorry to hear the news about George. He was my catcher in Legion baseball, Woodsville men's league that went to Wichita, Kansas and for two summers in Coaticook. He was a fantastic receiver. We had so much fun playing baseball together. George was always bigger than life. He had a "can do" attitude all the way. I am so sorry for you the family and I am sorry to have lost a lifelong friend.

George was a remarkable human being. He did so much for countless people in countless ways. If you gave him something he would give you back twice as much.
His family was his top priority and no matter how far away they were he would fly there to spend time with them.
Not one to sit back and let someone else do the work for an impending family gettogether, he would be cleaning his house, organizing the food, cooking the food, husking corn, picking strawberries, picking beans, whatever it took to feed us. Then do the dishes, rubbish, etc.
Our hearts are broken and we miss him every minute.
His children and grandchildren have wonderful memories of George and we all pray those memories will sustain them, somehow, in the difficult days ahead.

Ron, Randy, Jade & Jazz, Your father touched my life in a way no one will ever know. I have two very dear friends in this life and I just lost one. Over the 26 years of our friendship, the countless phone calls, through all his losses and yours, I could only stand in the shadows and love and support him. There was a side to your father that I was able to discover, He was loving, adventurous, funny and courageous. His self esteem was what I admired most. No matter what it was tennis, sking, hiking, he had to get to the lift line first, win each match, or be at the top of the mountain first. I used to read him my favorite poem often, to ground him and remind him what life was about. That life wasn't about the next big Deal, it was about love and family and fun. The poem is by Oriah Mountain Dreamer called the Invitation. I loved your father, you were blessed to have such a man in your life.Your father used to tell me the best thing out of our relationship was that I got him to loose the comb over hairstyle! May you continue to cherish and glorify his life, as I will in the midst of all my anger and tears. I know in my heart he has not left us to live life without him. Again I stand in the shadows to grieve your great loss and mine. I send you all my love and energy to get through this time. Love and Be Well, Your fathers biggest fan.

Ron, Randy, Jade & Jasmine, My heart goes out to you all. I was very saddened to hear of your loss. Your Dad was a special man who always wanted the best for youths in the upper valley area. I have fond memories of the days of little league when he was coaching the "Blue Jays". His heart was in the right place and he was very instrumental in the success of a lot of young athletes. He will be dearly missed.

To the Family* George was one of a kind. Our family has known him for years. we have rented (rent)from him. You would have to know George, to really know the real person he was. I listened to stories and many of his family and grandkids exspecially. He was proud of them all. I am sorry that we did not get to meet any of you but I am glad to have meet your dad not just as a landlord but as a person. He was a kind man, once I was broke down at the docts and he helped me and followed me to the car parts store to get a battery, he wanted to make sure I made it to get a battery. That was 2 yrs ago now but I never forgot. we will miss him dearly. Exspecially his friendly wave every time we seen him his hand was always in a wave and with a smile. He told me once also that he would be lost without his secretary Shirley so our condolences go out to her, in her painfull time also. prayers and thoughts to you all. This man will be missed deeply by our family. We lost a great man. Endora Smith, Dave Ritchason, Ashley R. and Family

Ron, Randy, Jade, Jazz - I was shocked to hear of your dad's death. I grew up in Orleans as a very close friend of Steve Boulanger, your next-door neighbor, when Ron and Randy were just young kids and George coached at Orleans High - what great teams he had! I was grateful to your dad for allowing me to tag along with my brother at the boys' basketball practices when I was just a 5th or 6th grade runt shooting two-hand set shots!
George gave much of himself to teach young men and women how to play the game and how to win. I remember playing town team hoops in the late 80's/early 90's and playing against him down at Hanover in a tournament - couldn't believe it when I saw him out there on the court at probably around 50 years of age....amazing. And as always he was competitive - and still pretty darn good.
He will be remembered and missed by many. My condolences to you on your loss.

Dear Ron, Randy, Jade & Jasmine,
We are sorry to learn of the death of your father. We were coming back from Burlington Friday night and saw the accident, but did not learn it was your Dad until Saturday morning. What a shock.
Your Dad gave countless hours to the youth of Vermont coaching sports. Seth and AJ had him for baseball and basketball and learned much from him.
Thank you for sharing your Dad with other children of all ages.
He will be missed.
Our sympathy,
