Franklin Galambos Obituary

Franklin Samuel Galambos, Berks County Artist; Born May 26, 1944 in Norristown, PA, the first child of Clara (Ott) and Frank ""Ted"" Galambos. His early years were spent in Sprint Mount and Collegeville, PA. He attended Shendoah Valley Academy, New Market VA and graduated from Blue Mountain Academy, Hamburg, PA in 1962. He worked as a commercial artist in Philadelphia until 1967 when he was drafted into the army as a conscientious objector and was assigned to the Psychological Warfare Special Forces, J.F. Kennedy Special War Center, Fort Bragg, NC; the assigned to U.S.A.R.V. Long Binh, Vietnam as a graphic illustrator where he was primarily involved with U.S. Army aviation projects. He was awarded the Army Commendation medal by Commanding General Creighton W. Abrams. He returned home in the fall of 1969 and resumed his career in commercial art, but in 1972 decided to follow his heart's calling as a fine arts artist creating silk screen prints, etchings, and engravings, and pen and ink drawings. He moved to Berks County in 1978 and fell in love with the countryside producing many images of his beloved Fry Rd. Although time has brought many changes to the Oley Valley he felt that his work, a record of our disappearing landscapes, would be his legacy. Having no children of his own he was a foster father to two teenage girls in the 1980's. Although he suffered from serious heart disease he was blessed to die peacefully in his sleep the morning of May 23, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Leslie (Hartmaier) Galambos, his brother Bruce Paul Galambos of Douglassville, his sister Rebecca (Galambos) Graham of Collegeville and his youngest brother Gary Edward Galambos of Sellersville, PA as well as nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, Bradley James Galambos of Leesburg, FL who died in September 2016. As he was a true lover of nature and animals, donations may be made in his name to the Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 11th St., Reading, PA 19604. I just came across this post as we were talking about my family's business which Frank worked at with my dad Fred and my mom Iris in the graphic and printing business in Philadelphia before going into the service and then came back afterwards. I had such fond memories of him. He was so talented and my folks loved him.

I just ran across this news after buying my 9th Galambos piece. I bought my first as a young girl in the 1970s, living in Akron Ohio.
My collection has grown and followed me wherever I moved, and my now 40 year old daughter is continuing this path, having just bought a 1973 piece titled Two Cedars. His works make me feel peaceful, happy and hopeful. Im sorry to hear that hes gone; we were lucky to have him and his beautiful talent.

Billy and I will forever admire your gift in our hearts as we look upon your incredible pieces we are blessed to have within our home. We wished we could have spent time again with you and Leslie but you will forever remain loved within our memories...

Franks sensitive nature was undeniably one of a kind. This sensitivity allowed him to see what others did not, transfer his observations to paper, and thereby imprint in history our disappearing landscapes. As his hands relayed the observed messages one can only imagine the intensity and tenacity he experienced to transcribe the information correctly. These emotions show in the landscapes, eyes of animals, hands of children and aged individuals, dilapidated shacks, fragmented clouds, the beauty of a young body, an innocent face of a young child, cartoon race cars, a flock of birds, and a single heart with the words I Love You written across.

Perhaps some souls come to this earth to show us what we need to see; perhaps they are here to erase our blindness and make our stay here aware and meaningful. If this is true, then Franklin is one of those souls.

With undying love for the family that has passed from these worldly landscapes, and earnest compassion for those that remain,

Frank - You were one of a kind. Leslie, so sorry for your loss. We will never forget Frank, especially since I see Frank's "Moonlight Lane" every day of my life which brings back so many memories. Leslie, may your happy memories bring you peace.

Spending an afternoon with him and his wife was one of my best memories.
Having fallen in love with his Oley Valley Sunrise in a gallery in Baltimore. I tracked him down to ask where I could see more of his work and he invited me to his studio. To this day I wish I had been able to afford a work called "Corn Husk".
My husband and I have five of his etchings and delight in them every day.
Many hugs to his family. Tory
