PITTSTON TWP. — Senator Raphael J. Musto, 85, a lifelong resident of Pittston Township, passed away Thursday morning, April 24, 2014, at home. He and his wife, the love of his life, Frances Panzetta Musto, celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on April 6, 2014.
Ray was a son of the late Representative James Musto and Rose Frushon Musto. He was a graduate of Pittston Township High School, class of 1946, and King's College, class of 1971. He later received a Doctorate of Letters and degrees from both King's College and Wilkes University.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.
Musto began his legislative career in 1971, elected to serve the remainder of his late father's term. He served in the U.S. Congress in 1980 and in 1982 began a 28-year career in the Pennsylvania Senate until his retirement in 2010.
He was a renowned legislative strategist and worked across party lines as the sponsor or co-sponsor of legislation focusing on the environment, crafting one of the first clean air bills in the country. Other legislative priorities included education and the rights of the disabled. He was the catalyst behind Luzerne County's Grandparents raising Grandchildren program.
Constituent service was the cornerstone of his public career and Musto was a fierce advocate for the citizens of his district. Above all, he will be remembered as a family man.
He was a member of St. Joseph Marello Parish, Pittston. He was also a proud member of the Pittston Township Fire Department and many other civic organizations.
He was preceded in death by sister, Louise Francioso; and brother, Gerard Musto.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children, James and his wife, Mary, Jenkins Township; Ray Jr. and his wife, Karen, Hughestown; Michael and his wife, Laurine, Arlington, Virginia, and Fran and her husband, Dave Drozda, Plains Township; grandchildren, Carly, Christopher and Alexandra, Raphael III, Lisa, Nicholas Musto; Kimberly and Krysten Drozda; great-grandchild, Kai Drozda; siblings, James and his wife, Gertrude; Antoinette Deeb; Biagio and his wife, Carol; Joseph and his wife, Fortunata; John and his wife, Philomae; in-laws, Domenica Musto, James Francioso, James and Sue Panzetta, Anita Panzetta, Mary Panzetta; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to Carly Musto, PA-C; Dr. Mauer Biscotti and Dr. David Greenwald for their exceptional care and compassion. They also thank the Pittston Township Volunteer Fire Department, the paramedics/ambulance and police departments for their assistance and support.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William St., Pittston. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
