Richard Hogoboom Obituary

Richard Leon Hogoboom, 96, formerly of Shavertown, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at Heath Village Nursing Center in Hackettstown, N.J.

Born June 25, 1924, Dick grew up in Fargo, N.D., the youngest of three children of his father, Dale D. Hogoboom Sr., and his mother, Ethel Ruby Iverson Hogoboom.

Dick graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1942 and briefly attended North Dakota State University before joining the U.S. Army at the height of World War II. He served three years in the infantry with service in England, France and Austria and remained in the Army Reserves until 1955.

Following the war, Dick attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a B.S. in economics in 1949. He was a member of the Sigma Xi fraternity.

Dick joined Kidder, Peabody & Co., Inc., following graduation and, except for a brief stint as a manufacturer's representative in North Carolina, where he met and married his wife, Millie, spent more than 50 years as a financial advisor in Wilkes-Barre. Dick and Millie were married for 64 years before her death in 2018.

Shortly after their marriage in 1953, Dick and Millie moved to the Wilkes-Barre area, where they resided until 2004, when they moved to Chester, N.J., to be closer to family.

Dick served on the Board of Directors of the Wyoming Valley Children's Association and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was also a Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre.

In addition to his wife and parents, Dick's brothers, Col. Dale D. Hogoboom, Jr. and Elmer E. Hogoboom, preceded him in death.

Dick is survived by son and daughter-in-law, D. Andrew Hogoboom and Linda N. Hogoboom, of Houston, Texas, son and daughter-in-law, John D. Hogoboom and Dana L. Griffith, of Mendham, N.J.; six grandchildren, Trevor and wife, Tara, Ashton Whitter and husband, Blake, Richard II, Sarah, Emily and Benjamin; and two great-grandchildren, McKenna Belle Hogoboom and Bryson William Whitter; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A private funeral service will be held at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Zanicky officiating. Interment will follow at the Huntsville Cemetery. The family intends to host a memorial celebration of Dick's remarkable life once circumstances permit.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to donate to the Wyoming Valley Children's Association, 1133 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, PA 18704.
