Dennis epitomized the saying of Rabbi Tarfon, cited in Talmud, in regard to Torah study and perfecting this world: You are not obliged to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it. My condolences to his family.

Maureen, I don't recall where Dennis and I first met, because I was director of the Peace and Justice Commission of the Albany Diocese from 1979 - 2013, and our paths crossed many times: Christ the King Parish, the Interfaith Alliance, UNA/USA, WRPI, and the Muslim Solidarity Committee.
There's nothing I can add to Dennis' obituary, which so well describes him as a true Christian gentleman. He followed Jesus' teaching to love others, especially those who are considered worthless by the powerful and privileged of this world, but for whom God has a special love. Dennis shared that love and so became God's own:
Come, you, who are blessed by my Father. In merit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, an immigrant and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Whatever you did for for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:34 - 36,40)
Maureen, you must be a special person to have so generously shared Dennis with others, so although we haven't met, I feel that I know something important about you. I hope that your loss becomes a little less painful as the days go by. Grief is the price of love, and it can be exhausting. I hope that if you need extra rest, you will take it.
