Erna Zwicklbauer Obituary

GUILDERLAND Erna Zwicklbauer, affectionately known as Oma by family, friends, staff and patrons of the Bavarian Chalet, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Erna was born January 8, 1911 in Steinegg, Germany. She immigrated to Albany, N.Y. by herself at age 15. She married Franz X. Zwicklbauer in 1938 and together they operated the Little Bavaria Restaurant in Albany from 1949 to 1963 and the Bavarian Chalet Restaurant in Guilderland from 1951 to 1984. He passed away in 1983. She was the beloved mother of Franz K. Zwicklbauer (Frances) of Guilderland and Rudolf E. Zwicklbauer of Waukesah, Wis.; grandmother of Marianne Zwicklbauer (Dr. Clifford Belden) of Hoosick Falls, Dr. Michael Zwicklbauer (Marianne) of Newport News, Va., Franz J. Zwicklbauer of Guilderland, Liesl Gorman (Edward) of Hoosick Falls, Mara Warren (Daniel) of Algonquin, Ill. and Kurt Zwicklbauer (Jennifer) of Elburn, Ill.; great-grandmother of Jessica, Michael, Kristin, Erik, Elise and Franz J. (Jr) Zwicklbauer, Patrick, Victoria and Abigail Gorman; sister of Rudolf Gnam of Germany and the late Emma Volz and Klara Faas. She is survived by a niece, Lori Zwicklbauer Hill, and a nephew, Werner Zwicklbauer, and many other nieces and nephews in Germany. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Church of St. Madeleine Sophie, 3500 Carman Rd., Guilderland. Family and friends are invited to the Bavarian Chalet, Western Turnpike, Guilderland on Monday starting at 4:30 p.m. to continue the celebration of Oma's life. Those who wish may make contributions to the American Heart Association or the Franz Zwicklbauer Memorial Soccer Scholarship, c/o Athletic Dept. at Guilderland Central High School, Guilderland Center, NY 12085.

Oma was a wonderful woman who taught me a lot about life - from her endless strength to her attention to detail. I was sadden to hear of her passing. Seeing her sitting at the family table as you entered the resturant is a lasting image in my mind. She will be missed.
