Nancy Olson Obituary

OLSON Nancy J. Olson passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009. Nancy had been serving as International Protocol Officer for the City of Jacksonville Florida, but began her long international service career during the Vietnam War - when she worked for the State Department, - stationed in both Saigon and DaNang. During one of her leaves from Vietnam - Nancy had her first taste of Washington DC political life when she took tea at President Nixon's White House in honor of her work with the Pakistan Relief Committee. After her Vietnam tour ended - Nancy next worked for the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. Although Nancy enjoyed Thailand - her post there lacked the excitement she'd experienced in Vietnam - so when she heard about a position in Africa - she snapped at the opportunity to move there to teach English. Back then, she was the only American living in the town of Kalemie (in what is now the D.R. of Congo), but after her pet poodles had one too many battles with venomous snakes - Nancy left Africa to pursue her earlier sparked interest in Washington D.C. politics. Nancy first worked as a lobbyist for an international company that sent her to France to earn a mini-masters degree in business administration co-sponsored by Stanford. Nancy was one of the founders of Women in Government Relations, Inc. (WGR) - now a 750 member non-profit, non- partisan association committed to the advancement of women at all career levels of government relations. Nancy later worked for the Commerce Department during both the Reagan and Bush administrations - serving first as the Director of Industrial Liaison for the International Trade Administration - and then later as the Deputy Director of the Office of Business Liaison. After leaving her political appointment, Nancy became the Director of Operations for the Southern Europe USO center, where she based in Rome. While there, she met with Pope John Paul II and developed a life-long love for everything Italian. After serving in the same capacity for the USO's Caribbean center in Puerto Rico - Nancy worked for the International Republican Institute (IRI), an NGO for the advancement of worldwide democracy. While in that position, she served in Romania - and later published a book called - 'Romania for Business Travelers'. In 1993, she went to work for the Jacksonville mayor's International Development Commission, where, among other things, she was assigned supervision of the Jacksonville Sister Cities program. Nancy was the founding President of Northeast Florida Women in International Trade as well as a founding member of Protocol and Diplomacy International. Nancy's work for the city took her to China, South Africa, Chile, Argentina and back to France. With two trips to her families Swedish homeland in - Nancy had lived or traveled in over 23 countries in lifetime. She was fluent in French and competent in Italian. Nancy shared her culinary talents with friends at her legendary dinner parties, and working in her lavish garden was her refuge. Nancy was a devotee of Opera and had recently become an accomplished ballroom dancer. Nancy is survived by her dear friend Ron Castiglia of New York, sister Lynne Olson of Lansing, Michigan, brother Richard Olson of Olivet, Michigan, and countless other relatives including Florida locals - cousin Pauli Kirby of Ponte Vedra and nephew Corey Berry of St. Johns. She is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Lorraine Olson and beloved sister Judy. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 29th, in the First Presbyterian Church, 118 E. Monroe Street, Downtown Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers or other monetary gifts of any sort, the family requests that donations be made to a fund to establish an international Scholarship in Nancy's name at the University of North Florida. Checks should be made payable to UNF Foundation/ Nancy Olson Scholarship and sent to University of North Florida Foundation, 1 UNF Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32224. My Dear Nancy
I wanted all to know our story and how much we loved each other. Our story is a love story with a tragic ending. One with a beginning and an end,but no middle. The middle was the 40 years that you were following your dreams.
We met at a dance when I was at Michigan State& we fell madly in love. We were always together and crazy for each other for 3 years in college & then after graduation you came back with me to my home in New York.A year later we were engaged when you realized your dream to travel. You asked me to go with you but that could not be. This was your dream. We parted 2 months before the wedding & that was out last contact.Shortly thereafter,I heard that you went to Vietnam. My life went in a more traditional direction. I was married for 29 years and have 3 wonderful sons. Nancy...Craig & Kevin were able to come to Jacksonville for you. Scott wanted to come but was unable to make it but sends you his love.
Two years ago I was determined to find you. My co-workers were helping me search for you & were concerned that you would not remember me or even care about me after 40 years. My dear Nancy,I told them that I knew what we had when we parted ways & I never forgot you & I was sure you were waiting for me to find you.
I remember my first flight to Jacksonville. That was 2 years ago. We recognized each other immeadiately at the airport. We went to your house & talked & hugged & cried. Then we would compose ourselves & then hugged & cried more.
We saw each other about every 2 months for 4 day weekends. They were always great and full of fun.We worked in the garden & made many trips to Home Depot. We danced, you cooked Italian meals & we drank wine [only red] & planned on going to Italy to visit my Dad's birth place.
Nancy,it was my intention to spend the rest of my life with you. I know that is what you wanted also. I never expected our beautiful love story to end so soon.
Nancy,I love you and will never forget you. Until we meet again.....
Your honey
Ronny

My father Bob Jackson and Nancy were dear friends and shared a true love for all that was international. I remember traveling to Jacksonville to visit my father with my family and we had a wonderful dinner at Nancy's...it was better than any restaurant!! My dad loved her garden and shared the beautiful flowers she grew with many at the Riverside Prebyterian House where he lived...they brought many smiles. I know he would be at her memorial if he could. Please know he sends his warmest thoughts and condolences along with mine.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

I knew Nancy through involvement with several international organizations in town including North Florida Women in International Trade (NFWIT) and the International Resource Center of Jacksonville. When I moved home to Jacksonville from Washington, DC, Nancy was one of the first people I spoke with. I wondered how I would ever find an international niche in Jacksonville until I saw the city through Nancy's eyes. Suddenly international issues, organizations and opportunities were all that I could see. I found an excellent job with an international company within weeks of moving home because of a job lead from an NFWIT luncheon. I became active for many years in NFWIT and several other organizations that Nancy told me about -- many that she either founded or helped to build.

The ladies (and gentlemen)of NFWIT and other international organizations in town were always celebrating the international accomplishments made in Jacksonville and dreaming about the international accomplishments yet to come. Nancy continually encouraged others to appreciate, to respect and to learn more about the cultures and countries of this world. And for goodness sake - she begged everyone to use proper protocol:)

It is so very fitting that you have established an international studies scholarship in her name. It is the perfect tribute, and a testament to a life both well-learned and well-lived.

Peace be with you always.
Karen Rinaman Barakat (condolences also from my husband Oliver Barakat)
