Tere Zubizarreta Obituary

Tere Zubizarreta, whose one-woman, one-typewriter, one-client agency grew over 35 years into a Hispanic advertising powerhouse, died Thursday of cancer, which she fought personally for five years and through community agencies that she supported. She was 69.

Zubi Advertising -- which now includes her son Joe as COO and daughter Michelle as chief administrative officer -- is one of the country's largest agencies specializing in advertising to Hispanic markets in Spanish and English.

Zubizarreta launched the venture in 1972 with $465. It now has 115 employees in four offices -- Coral Gables, Dallas, Detroit and Los Angeles -- and billings of $195 million.

'She felt that advertising was a very unique way of shaping and molding consumers' minds and hearts . . . and getting it out to 'her people' was very important to her," her daughter said.

Major clients include American Airlines, Ford, Winn-Dixie, Washington Mutual, S.C. Johnson and Olive Garden.

Last fall, the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies gave her its lifetime achievement award, calling her a "visionary" and a "pioneer," terms that crop up in nearly every conversation with colleagues and clients.

"Tere was a pioneering woman and a real trailblazer for the Hispanic community," Ray Rodríguez, Univision president/COO, said in an e-mail. "She always fought for the underdog and won."

Miami marketing expert Jose Cancela placed Zubizarreta "at the forefront of the Spanish-language agencies. She parlayed [that] into a national presence [and] put South Florida on the map to have the ability to manage national accounts."

Teresa Zubizarreta came from the "very elite, educated" Arteaga family of Camagüey, said childhood friend and former business partner Tere Benach.

She had been an executive secretary before leaving Cuba in 1960 with husband Octavio Zubizarreta, then a hotel casino executive, and their son.

A MAN'S WORLD

When she founded her company, advertising was a man's world. She hired on as a secretary with the McCann Marschalk agency even though, as she told The Miami Herald in 1982, she knew nothing about advertising and couldn't use an electric typewriter. She told her boss: "I'll learn."

Aida Levitán, a friendly business rival, said that at the time, the Hispanic market "had not acquired the mass so that advertisers took notice. Corporations didn't see the need to advertise in Spanish."

Benach recalls that her friend went out on her own in free office space in a graphics studio at 1465 S. Miami Ave.

Zubizarreta's first client, a Kendall developer, advertised in English. But in 1976, she went bilingual and soon landed El Miami Herald -- El Nuevo Herald's predecessor -- and Pepsi, Goya Products and Jack Daniel's whiskey.

In 1977, she told The Herald, "In Cuba, perhaps this never would have happened. I would have been content, I think, just to be a well-off [homemaker] with lots of maids, people to do things for me, playing canasta. . . . Here I had to [succeed] to survive."

The El Herald account "gave tremendous prestige," Levitán said."She was very politically and [professionally] savvy and used her connections, and she fought for her business in every respect."

She was also generous with her time and money.

"We love her a lot here," said Harve Mogul, United Way of Miami-Dade president/CEO. "She is one of those people who can help folks embrace one another when times are tough. . . . She was very involved with new immigrants [and] it didn't make any difference in her life if she was talking to Cubans or Haitians. She had a huge heart."

Zubizarreta was on the local United Way board and became the first Cuban-American to served on the United Way of America's national board. She co-founded FACE, or Facts About Cuban Exiles, and was also active with La Liga Contra el Cáncer. Zubizarreta was diagnosed with colon cancer five years ago, Benach said. After two years of what appeared to be successful chemotherapy, however, the cancer spread.

By then, her children were entrenched in the firm. "My mom tried to teach us, and she knew what she knew and what she didn't know," said Michelle. "The addition of us into the company would continue her legacy and would push the company to evolve" technologically.

"Her desire was that something she started would not end with her."

DETERMINATION

Her mother always believed she would triumph over cancer, Michelle said.

'Two weeks ago she said she was convinced her body and mind were in remission. . . . Two days ago, I said I was going to a staff meeting and she said, `Tell them to keep pushing.' "

In addition to her husband and children, Zubizarreta is survived by grandchildren Charlotte and Michael Zubizarreta, sister Annie Slatkoff and her children, Joshua, Jessica and Sara.

Visitation is from 8 to 11 tonight at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Funeral Home, 3344 SW Eighth St. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Kieran Catholic Church, 3605 S. Miami Ave., followed by private burial.

The family asks that donations be sent to La Liga Contra el Cáncer, the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the United Way of Miami-Dade County.

Today I was sitting in my college course, "Business Communications" and watched a short piece on Tere Zubizarreta. I was so inspired by her that I wanted to call her and tell her so. I logged on to get her information and was saddened to read that she had passed.

Just know that even though I did not know her, I was personally inspired by her. Keep her legacy alive.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

La muerte no nos roba los seres amados. Al contrario, nos los guarda y nos los inmortaliza en el recuerdo.

Así como el ignorante esta muerto antes de morir, la mujer de talento vive aun de muerta.

Many who will read this may not remember me. I was Tere's first assistant, secretary. I still remember the very first place--right before moving into the 2525 3rd Avenue address-- when I joined her and her partner at the time Tere Benach. I was very young, and learned so very much from her in the eight years in her employ, that it afforded me the opportunity of a career as International Director for a major hospital. I think of Tere often, with much respect and admiration.

Much peace, Addy

What can I say that has not already been said. One of the best experiences of my working life were my years at Zubi Advertising. Tere, her family and her extended family at the office are a very special group of people. I also have fond memories of her Dad coming by the office and giving the ladies a candy and getting a kiss in return.

I remember a telephone call Tere made to our home at a time we had a personal crisis. I was no longer part of Zubi, but she took the time to call and pledge her support. She cried with me that night.

She was so special and so giving. It has taken me a long time to extend my condolences to her family because it was hard to be brief when you think so highly of an individual who was so worthy.

God Bless Tere, you are with the angels now.

Hay Tere,

Hard for me to believe that you're gone (from this earth). We didn't see each other often, but when we did, it was as though no time had passed. Thinking of you brings a smile to my face...I think that's one of the biggest gifts a person can give to humanity. I still hear your laughter and your voice. I miss you and I'm sure that heaven is having una tremenda fiesta..now that you're around! Te quiero mucho.

I am priveledged to say that Tere has been a part of my life since before i was born. Always there for me when I needed her; she belived in me when no when else did. My only regret is that she was not my Godmother(My Sister got Lucky), because she was Godsent and like a mother when I needed her to be. My heart hurts knowing that she is not here on this plain, but it's at rest knowing that she is no longer in pain. Love and deep affection to my cousins Michelle y Oki.

Some people live a lifetime without leaving any mark of their existence. Mrs. Zubizarreta not only left a mark, but opened a path for all young Hispanic advertisers to follow. We will always remember what she did for our industry. God Bless.

Joe and Michelle, I read the news of your Mother's passing with sadness and fond memories. While I spent little time with her, the interactions we had surely meant more to me than her. I remember being in her office meeting on some community project and noticing the silver tray with a bottle of red wine and two glasses on it. I made some joke about it and she told me it was there for her regular Friday session with Roberto Suarez to "solve the world's problems". Now that is style! She was certainly a woman full of life and courage. I lost my own mother earlier this year, also to a long fight with cancer; so I fully understand how dearly she will be missed. You have my prayers. I am thankful for the opportunity to have been touched by her.

I will always remember the love she had for my parents, especially my father AlfredoPortela. Tere and Octavio came to Chicago for my father's funeral and spent time with my brother Felli, myself and all of our friends telling old stories about their lives as young men and women back in Cuba. We were amazed at how many of the stories were stories our father had told us. She was a true friend to my father and mother, and her beautiful spirit was and always will be magnetic. Rest in Peace Tere. Love, "Mechu" Portela.

GRACIAS "MAMA ZUBI" POR SER LA MUJER QUE FUISTE.

Joe, Michelle & Octavio,

I am so sorry for your loss. It touches so many of deeply because Tere was an incredible woman that inspired and will continue to inspire so many to reach for the stars. Tere showed us that with a combination of love, dedication, determination and intellect, there are no boundaries to what one can achieve. Because of her way of being and her drive to accept no less than the best, she erased stereotypes and paved the way of Hispanic advertising. The torch is now in our hands and we have to continue to strive and to “push” as she would’ve wanted us to.

Tere, we are honored and blessed to have known you, even if it was short-lived as in my case. We pray that you guide us as we continue your legacy here at your agency. Thank you for being an example of what it really means to “push” and to never accept less than the best. We will miss you!

Dear Joe and Michelle,

I'm sincerely sorry for your loss.

Those of us who never met your mom will always remember her for her achievements and enormous success in life and in the world of advertising. But this legacy only reveals her business accomplishments; what I believe most matters are all those special moments when she enriched your lives through her love, guidance and wisdom, which have or will help you in your evolution. She will always live within you.

My best wishes.
