Remembering a great teacher and friend today. Hamish was such a kind, loving, and compassionate person and quick to give a compliment. But foremost he was such a great artist. I am honored to display a number of his works in my home. His positive outlook on life continues to inspire me to be a better person. Miss you Hamish and will always treasure our friendship.

Mr. Hamish MacEwan was an incredible art instructor during my 4 years at St. Mary's-in-the-Mountains (now The White Mountain School) in Bethlehem, N.H. His kindness, skill, wit, and good homor gave him the grace to teach effectively without domineering. He will be sorely missed by so many, but his legacy will prevail for eternity. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family. God Bless.

I was saddened to find that Hamish Macewan has passed away. He was a proud and long time member of St Andrew's Society of Jacksonville. Hamish was a great friend and supporter of the local Scottish community. Before his illness, Hamish had a radio show on PBS and promoted as much of the Scottish events and activities in the area as he could. He would call the president of the local games and of the society and ask for the latest information so he could put it out his next radio show. We would call him for information and advice as he was also a wealth of information on Scotland and her history. We have missed him the last few years as he fought that terrible disease. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Hamish (Mr. MacEwan then) was my high school art teacher at Episcopal High School, Jacksonville in the early 70's. Art was always my favorite class because of him. He was so encouraging and gentle. After living in DC for many years, I relocated back to Jax in the early 1990's. When planning a trip to Scotland I called EHS and was able to get back in touch with Hamish. I wanted to talk to him before my trip. We then became friends and remained so for all of these years. He was able to help me through hard times and always had kind words. What more could one ask of a friend?

Dear Carol, John and family I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I will never forget the kindness your dad showed me when I was just a lad. Sometimes it is the small things that have the greatest impact.

I was richly blessed to know Hamish and his beloved wife, Gerry. I was personally and professionally enriched and challenged to grow, -- as I taught with Hamish in the Art Department at Episcopal High School for 3 years, -- 1978- 1981. Hamish added significantly to the cultural fibre of Jacksonville for five decades. He touched the character and spirit of many students and friends. Thank you, Lord for his life.

I was lucky enough to have been one of his art students at JEHS. Can still see him thoughtfully pondering my art before providing a carefully worded critque/encouragement/suggestion. Chin in hand, head bowed, then that lovely smile. Great man, great person.
