Eloise Marie Tomanski
Eloise Marie (Steiger) Tomanski, 82 years young, died suddenly on March 18, 2018 at her Hollywood, FL residence. She lived in Toledo, OH as a longtime Shoreland resident in the milder months. Eloise was born on May 27, 1935, in Oneonta, NY to Emil and Ruth (Eldred) Steiger. She lived in Toledo since childhood and graduated early her junior year from Woodward high school. A year later she married her high school sweetheart Bob on June 27, 1953. Eloise raised five children before resuming her higher education at Toledo University. As a lifelong learner, she pursued a degree in elementary education graduating magna cum laude. After graduation she taught in the Toledo Public Schools working at Spring School as a third grade teacher. She then earned her Master's of Education degree with a reading certification. Eloise became a reading specialist and taught at Chase, St. Hedwig and McKinley schools. She was active as a union building representative and served as chairperson of the reading department. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the Ohio Retired Teacher's Association.
Although her family was her life, Eloise found time for many hobbies. She loved to quilt—piecing, hand-quilting and tying well over one hundred quilts. She often remarked, "I have so many quilts in my head." Eloise was always planning the next quilting project, and was currently hand quilting Hunter's Star. Eloise was an avid reader, and frequently would talk books with her family, and belonged to the book club at the local library. Eloise had a passion for genealogy and was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered at the Wolcott House. She loved to garden in her yard, growing herbs, flowers, and raspberries. She was a member of the Class of '52 Woodward High School Girls, meeting with them for their monthly luncheons. Eloise enjoyed traveling, going to Europe, Mexico, and Spain. In later years, she traveled with her daughter Julie going out west to The Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, Bryce Canyon as well as East to Maine. She also traveled with her other children, Ruth and Ray, going to Florida, and visiting her children -Bob in Boston, and Susan in Alabama. Eloise and Her husband Bob were snowbirds in retirement going to their Hollywood residence in the cold winter months, though always coming back for holidays. Her family was her life.
Eloise was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob; she missed him every day since his passing. Also preceding her in death are her brothers Walter and William Steiger, and sister Anne Powers. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert (Maureen) Tomanski, Jr., Ruth (John) Clark, Raymond (Marie) Tomanski, Susan Znamenski, and Julia (Robert Eric) Worstell. Also missing her are grandchildren Victoria Holmes and Raymond Tomanski, Robert (Allison) Clark, Andrei L. Znamenski, Blythe (Garrett) Price, Tristan, Hunter, and Bryce Worstell, as well as Great Grandchildren Haley (Mike) Blake, Robert Holmes, and Lily Clark. She is survived by her sister Linda Seifert and sister-in-laws Elaine Steiger, MaryLou Steiger, and Dorothy Cisek. Also missing her will be her cat, Stormy, who was a great companion to her.
Visitation will be held at Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home 5055 Secor Road Toledo, OH on Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 2-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home on Monday March 26 at 10:15 followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Adalbert and Hedwig Parish 3323 LaGrange Street at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
