Richard HAMMER Obituary

HAMMER Richard (Dick) Arlen Richard (Dick) Arlen Hammer, 76, born July 26, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Richard passed away after a very brief battle with cancer. He was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School in Toledo, Ohio and retired as an Electrician for the I.B.E.W Local 8 in Rossford, Ohio and Raytheon Engineers & Construction. Dick was a man of very few words but had a strong solid influence for those who knew and loved him. He had a strong love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. If truth be told, his family and friends would have to search hard to find a lake or stream throughout Michigan that he didn't throw a line into and most people would tell you that a "fishing trip" was never just a "fishing trip" to Dick. Dick had a love for Michigan college football and you could always find him watching the Wolverines on Saturday's during football season. A common statement that you would hear him say was "Go Blue" especially to the fans of the competition. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Rachel (Marlatt) Hammer of Sebastian, FL and brother-in-law, James Boschard of Sebastian, FL. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Hammer; his sisters, Ruthann Boschard of Sebastian, FL, Rita Lowe and husband, Jim of Lambertville, MI and his brother, Robert Hammer and wife, Barbara of Ida, MI; his children Laura Hammer (Toledo, OH) Lisa and Chris Koester (Clinton, MI), Michelle Hammer (Toledo, OH), Richard and Tammy Hammer (Milbury, OH); his three step-children, Chris and Melissa Baumer, Cindy Stephens and Robert Baumer of Pennsylvania and 8 grandchildren, Amanda Whitehurst, Mykyla Whitehurst, Chelsea Adams, Christopher Whitehurst, Connor Koester, Dylan Price, Briana Freeman and Jake Stephens along with many nieces and nephews and his best buddy and cherished companion Bing. The family will be planning a celebration of his life and details will be shared when that is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the IBEW Local 8 Benevolent Fund in Memory of Richard "Dick" Hammer at 807 Lime City Road Rossford, Ohio 43460

One night just after Grandma Hammer passed away, Uncle Dick and I sat up talking until well after midnight, discussing everything from nuclear power to the Gulf Stream current. Uncle Dick followed my sailboat travels on facebook and regularly added interesting comments that surprised me because I didn't know he had "been there done that," too. It was then that I realized the deep intellect and wide range of experiences that shaped this outstanding, well-traveled and extremely compassionate human being. He was more than a fantastic Santa of an Uncle (although that was awesome enough). He also contributed to the world around him on a larger scale. I am really glad we had that talk and I do celebrate a life well lived, smiling through tears. Looking forward to seeing you all when loved ones gather this summer to laugh and remember this marvelous man.

I'll never forget the night you were here playing cards (on your way up north to fish) and I was on your lap, playing possum so you would have to carry me to bed. You lost a button on your shirt and when I started to laugh I was sooooo in trouble!! Love knowing you are in a better place and can see your smile always :)

Uncle Dick you will always be a part of our hearts and souls. You will be missed and thought of everyday. You gave the greatest hugs! I have so many great memories of you living right down the road when we were growing up, playing football in your front yard, spending the nights and driving you crazy with all of girls running around when we spent the night. Love you always and forever!

All my condolences to his family. I was once a part of that family. It has been many years since I saw him but he always had a special place in my heart. The memories of him (and his parents) make me smile. I never forgot him and never will.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I went to school with Dick at DeVilbiss High School. I'm not too sure, did he go to Whittier School also? I know you'll find comfort in your memories of a very nice person.
