Harvey D. Sr.
Harvey D. Vershum Sr., 98, of Toledo passed away March 17, 2016, at University of Toledo Medical Center. Harvey was born on March 5, 1918, in Riga, Michigan. He was the son of James Vershum and Adeline (Breitner) Vershum. Harvey was employed by the Magnesium Fabricators of Adrian, Michigan for 6 years prior to serving in the United States Army. After his service in the Army, he was employed as a Die Setter with the City Auto Stamping Company for 36 years until retiring in 1980.
Harvey was proud of his service in the United States Army during World War II. He spent 116 days as a POW, being captured in the second wave of the Battle of the Bulge. Harvey was a decorated veteran. He received two bronze stars for his honorable service to our country. During his retirement, Harvey enjoyed fishing and hunting and he bowled three times a week until he was 95.
Harvey was preceded in death by his loving wife, Letha Vershum; son, Albert Vershum; brothers, Lewis, Russell Vershum; sisters, Ruth Abner, Eileen Schwede,, Doris Dipmore, and his special friend, Loretta Stricker.
He is survived by his sons, Harvey (Jeanette) Vershum Jr., Micheal (Vicky) Vershum; daughter, Sharon (Paul) Lindsay; sisters, Cleo Uphell, Coleen (Al) Hoag, Margie Liedal; brothers, James (Charlotte) Vershum, Richard (Joyce) Vershum; daughter-in-law, Linda Vershum; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home, 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd. at Byrne Road on Monday, March 21, 2016, 2:00-8:00 p.m., where funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. Contributions can be made out to a charity of the donor's choice.
