BRAZIL — Robert “Bob” Ray Romas, 73, lifetime resident of Clay County, passed away at his residence at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Clay County’s Perry Township, on Oct. 11, 1933, to Harry and Emma Siegelin Romas. Bob attended Brazil High School and graduated in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 3, 1957, until being honorably discharged Dec. 14, 1959.He married Doris May Meyer on Sept. 2, 1978.He owned and operated Bob Romas Trucking and Excavating Inc. for many years until it was sold in 2006. He also was a founder for H and H Ready Mix in Brazil, Montezuma, and Mansfield, and later partnered with his son, Cliff Romas until it was sold in 2005. He also has owned Parke West Materials in Montezuma since 1988. In 1989, he received the Commercial Focus Award in Clay County. He also served on the advisory board for the Jackson Township Trustees for many years.He enjoyed watching racing and was a sports enthusiast as well as spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 264, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, Order of Eastern Star Bowling Green Chapter 304, and the Brazil Elks Lodge.He is survived by his wife, Doris; sons, Cliff A. Romas and wife Lori, and Randy W. Romas and wife Mari, all of Brazil; daughters, Holly A. Romas of Brazil, and Hope M. Dalton and husband Brett of Carbon; grandchildren, Rachel Romas, Amanda Romas, Tanner Brown, Robby Romas, Duretta Brashier, and Ezra Brashier; brother, Benny Romas of Cory; sisters, Betty Betterilli and husband Andy of Missouri and formerly of New Jersey, and Berla Uber and husband Al of New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Francella Royer and Norma Staley; as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family members.Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel Saturday at 11a.m., with the Rev. Ted Schrory officiating. Burial will follow at Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery in Poland. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., and again Saturday morning from 7:30 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vista Care Hospice or to an organization of your choice.
