Ben Pavlu, 93 of Garwood, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2014 after suffering from Alzheimer's the past 7 years. He was born on December 3, 1920 in Altair to the late Henry and Sophie Zapalac Pavlu. Ben was a World War II Veteran and a member of St. Mary's Church, Nada Knights of Columbus and KJT Society. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mackie Lobpries Pavlu; daughters Enola Carroll and husband Taylor, Cindy Quinney and husband Darrell; grandchildren Kris Gertson and wife Emily, Cindy Silvas and husbad George, Drew and Cynthia Quinney, Chance Carroll; great-grandchildren Conner and Kyle Gertson, Nathan Silvas and Maddox Carroll. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Adela Korenek, Evelyn Drlik; and grandson Kyle Fink. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada with a Rosary recited at 6 pm. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Monday, May 12, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada with Reverend Joseph Vrana officiating. Interment will follow with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 251 of El Campo at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are Kris Gertson, George Silvas, Rudy Drlik, Ken Drlik, Dick Korenek, and Jim Korenek. The family would like to thank Cindy Vargas for her devotion and care the past 6 years and El Campo Hospice for their care the past 6 months. Memorial donations in honor of Ben may be made to Garwood Volunteer Fire Department, St. Mary's Catholic Church, or Houston Hospice-El Campo.
