Eugene Marresse Obituary

Published by Driscoll Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Jul. 12, 2017.
WEST BOXFORD – Eugene "Geno" A. Marresse, 78, of West Boxford, departed from this life at Sutton Hill Nursing Center in North Andover on July 12, 2017 after a period of declining health. He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years Susan P. Marresse; sons Andrew D. Marresse of West Boxford and Douglas J. Marresse and his spouse Edward J. Fisher of Yardley, PA; brother Andrew Marresse and wife Joan of Saco, ME; granddaughter Alma Marresse of West Boxford; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his best friend Jack Mullins. Eugene was born in Lawrence, son of the late Andrew and Marie Marresse. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School and graduated from Barber College in Boston. He also served in the United States Army and was currently a Master Mason with the Freemason Lodge of Mount Carmel A.F. & A.M. of Lynn for the past 23 years. Eugene was the owner of Georgetown Barbers for 52 years. Throughout his career, he gave generously, especially to any member of law enforcement or the military free of charge while they attended academy training. His shop was dubbed "The Shrine" by the Georgetown Police Department because the shop's walls were covered with military and law enforcement memorabilia. He gave haircuts to local law enforcement, State Police, the Marines and Armed Services. They got much more than a haircut – his shop was a place to congregate and engage in lively conversation and constant humor – it was a true haven. If customers went in sad or grumpy, they came out smiling or laughing because Eugene was a master joke teller and story regaler. He had a brilliant mind and was an avid reader with a photographic memory. He also loved to read the Merck Manual and would try to educate family members on the systems of the human body while their eyes glazed over! He enjoyed taking very long walks and loved lighthouses and all things nautical; he was a self-taught master of nautical knot tying, and built beautiful model size sailing ships with intricately tied rigging, sails, and masts from nothing but a block of wood and special string. Eugene was a devoted family man and always made sure that his loved ones and his home were well taken care of. He was instrumental in bringing about the establishment and yearly upkeep of the Boxford Town Beach volunteering numerous hours and resources over many years for the pleasure and betterment of his community. His family is deeply grateful to the staff at Sutton Hill for the wonderful care, compassion, and love that was showered upon Eugene during his stay there. They also wish to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Compassus Hospice for their care in making his final days more peaceful and comfortable. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 20, in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street, Haverhill, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Catholic Funeral Rites will be offered at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Eugene's memory to The Wounded Warrior Project, 150 Cambridge Park Drive, Suite 202, Cambridge, MA 02140 or to the Masonic Education and Charity Trust, 186 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02111. My Dad would bring me into Geno's when I was a kid in the early seventies. I can remember all the police patches all over his wall, and some of the stories he would tell. To finish up the haircut, he would grab a straight razor and sharpen it on the leather strap attached to the chair. I had no idea at the time that was what was happening because it was just normal. These days I don't think I'd let anyone other than Geno near my neck with a straight razor. He was a great guy. I wish I had a chance to go back and get another haircut before he had retired.

Absolutely loved Geno. The best haircuts...and the best conversations and friendship ever. I enjoyed returning to Georgetown in my Kentucky State Police uniform for a haircut in 1995. He was a special guy...never to be matched. Semper Fi, Geno.

Gino was always a friend to all, even in the days in the 60"swhen some of us were taking different roads. He was a great friend to the youth of Georgetown- even the ones without haircuts.

Dear Susie and family: So sorry for your loss. I have many memories of Geno and you and my brother, Jack. It had been many years since I had seen Geno but I was fortunate to catch up with him when I was in town for my last Georgetown High reunion in 2015. We talked for several hours about old times, new times good times and bad times. Besides myself, he was the only one who really knew my brother and the only person I could talk to about him. He will be truly missed!!

My deepest sympathy to Geno's wife, Susan and his sons and family. He often was in our office to say hi and to tell us stories and share of his wealth of knowledge. I did not get to say goodbye when he retired because I was out on maternity leave and I am sorry I didn't get to introduce him to my son. Geno was so kind and he gave me $2 bills for my baby anytime he came across them. I have them all and I will tell my son the story of "Geno the Barber" and the $2 bills when he is older. Geno you will truly be missed.

For over twenty years Geno was there to take care of my dwindling hair care needs. I was one of many who visited to receive not just a haircut but spiritual guidance. Geno's humor was legendary but his life stories and professed love for his wife Susan were what I remember most. May you rest in peace dear friend. You will be missed.

Dear Sue,Andy and Doug. Christine and I offer our deepest sympathy and prayers for all of you. While we all mourn the loss of "Geno"!! I can't help but to think if the New W. Boxford knows what a great loss it just suffered. The countless times we would beep or yell from the car and get a gigantic smile and a wave of his walking stick.Thinking back, I may have cried when my mom told me we were going to Geno's Barber Shop for a hair cut. See,every guy was growing their longer then and I wanted to as well. Not at Geno's
"give him a "Regular Boy's Cut". Some how even scalped, I would in fact leave laughing and OK .Thirty years later when the style changed again. There I was on Saturday morning waiting for an hour in Geno's Barber Shop, and there was Geno "You here for a Regular Men's Cut"? Yes and we both laughed. I hope Heaven is ready for you! God Bless
