LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC says former Nigerian member Henry Adefope has died at the age of 84.

The International Olympic Committee says he died Sunday. No cause of death was given.

Adefope, who held the rank of major general in the Nigerian Army, served as an IOC member from 1985 to 2006. Since 2006, he had been an honorary member.

Adefope headed Nigeria's national Olympic committee from 1967 to 1976. He chaired the organizing committee for the second All-Africa Games in Lagos in 1973, and was vice president of the Commonwealth Games Federation from 1974 to 1982.

A medical graduate of Glasgow University in Scotland, Adefope was Nigeria's minister of labor from 1975 to 1978 and foreign minister from 1978 to 1979.
