~ Hermelinda Lopez Cigarroa Cabada ~ October 28, 1944 - September 16, 2022 Hermelinda (or Mely) was born in 1944 to Ysidro Lopez and Maria De La Luz Cigarroa in California, Durango Mexico in her family home. She was one of six siblings that included Jose Guadalupe, Roberto, Isidro, Lazara, and Margarita. Because of the demands of daily life in Durango she was only able to complete the 6th grade, but when her whole family moved to Mexicali, Baja California in the early 1950's, she was able to continue her education by attending technical school, where she studied secretarial skills. In the 1960's Mely moved to Northren California, where she worked alongside her family as a farm worker in the fields, as a seamstress making clothes, and in a cannery with her brother. In the 1970's she moved from Northern California to Southern California with a friend from work to pursue other work. In December of 1978 in Los Angeles her son David Omar arrived. He was her pride and joy; her best friend. In the years that followed Mely took it upon herself to care for her elderly father after her mother had passed. She continued to be his caretaker until he died in 2002. In 1988 she married the love of her life, Santos Fabela Cabada, in a small ceremony in Huntington Park, California. Along with her husband, Mely took her love of mothering and applied it by becoming a foster parent to troubled children. Mely lived all over Southern California, From Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Bell Gardens, Corona and finally to Pomona where she spent the final 20 years of her life. In February of 2018 she received a wonderful gift from her son; she finally became a grandmother to her grandson Douglas Andrew. Who she loved with all her heart. Mely had many interests but focused on becoming an expert cook and seamstress, taking on the seamstress hobby from her mother and the sewing box she had inherited from her. She loved to tell stories about how as a child she got her first Barbie doll as a gift from her brother and practiced making clothes for her, and later for her nieces' dolls. She also enjoyed making handmade clothes and Halloween costumes for her son, nieces, and nephews. But Mely was known mostly for her big heart. She only had one son but treated everyone she met as if they were her children. So many friends, neighbors and family can tell stories of how Mely raised them or helped them out like a mother would. Mely was an animal lover as well, and treated animals (birds, cats, dogs) as she would treat any person. She spent her life taking it upon herself to spread motherly love wherever she went and never asked for anything in return. Mely is survived by her son David Omar Lopez, grandson Douglas Andrew Jones-Lopez and husband Santos Fabela Cabada. She is also survived by her grand nieces and nephews who called and treated her like a grandmother along with all those whose hearts she touched. She will always be remembered as everyone's mom.
