I was just thinking of Jerry this morning. I think of him a lot. Jerry represented to me the complete package of what an architect ought to be. He was my mentor and in so many ways an inspiration. It is interesting he could have this role for me because we disagreed on so many things, notably religion (him agnostic, me Catholic) and politics (him conservative, me liberal). He liked to bait me and took obvious satisfaction in prodding and provoking me. But that kind of interaction led me to push myself, to stretch and attempt things I probably would not have done otherwise. Jerry was one of the main reasons I traveled, and served in the Peace Corps, which is where I met my wife Katherine. Jerry helped to lead me from being a lonely and isolated person to somebody who lives life rather than just watches it.
He had the soul of an artist, and was an intellectual, but never seemed to take himself or the world too seriously. Individualist, creative, hardheaded, hands-on, iconoclast, with a big heart - that was how I knew him.
Jerry, since you're in Heaven now, I can tell you this: told you so!
