John Munce, Jr. Obituary

Published by D'Anjolell Stigale Memorial Home & Cremation Services, Inc. of Aston on Sep. 4, 2018.
John A. Munce, Jr. "Duke Snow" John Aloyious Munce, Jr. "Duke Snow" age 86 of Chester Heights, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on September 4, 2018. Duke Snow was a respected locally known musician, painter, writer, sculptor and breeder of rare and exotic birds. Duke was loved and admired by many. As the leader of the band, 'Duke Snow & The Driftwoods', Duke's music career playing local country music venues and concert halls spanned six decades until his retirement in the late 1990's. Because of Duke's love for nature, wildlife and local landscape, Duke tried his hand at painting in the 1970's. Today, Duke's beautiful artwork adorns the walls of his countless patrons, friends and family here and abroad. Most important to Duke was his family. He was a loving, patient and dedicated husband, father, pop-pop, brother, uncle and friend to many people. Duke was the son of the late John A. Sr. and Catherine B. Munce. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years Phyllis T. (nee Sakowski). Caring father of John A. Munce, III, Michael W. Munce, Bonnie A. (Michael) Cartieri, Diane "Kelly" (Paul) Fitzgerald. Also survived by his beloved five grandchildren, Jennifer, Elisabeth, Nicholas, Anthony and Shannon and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Damian, Luna and Aubrey Diane. Brother of Catherine Schatz and Anne Marie (Ronald) Fellman. Funeral services and burial will be private. A celebration of Duke's beautiful life will take place at a later date. Many musical memories,I went to Country music 101 with Duke Snow.He knew 100's of songs and remembered the lyrics to all of em.You had to be on your toes to play music in the Driftwoods. He would pull out an obscure Chet Atkins instrumental and then a Ray Price standard and he knes almost all the requests.I was amazed althould I did fall asleep standing up playing a few times at Nenos....Never far from my thoughts ever....

I had the pleasure of enjoying many evenings listening to Duke and his band back in the '70's. I am also fortunate to have been gifted with two of his paintings. You won't remember me, Phyllis, but I'll always remember you and Duke and your enduring love for one another.

Duke Snow was more than just my father in law, he was like a second father to me. In the 25 years I knew him he taught me about all the wonderful birds of this earth,he shared his beautiful artwork with me and my wife Bonnie, and when we visited Duke and Phyllis's house he always took out one of his guitars and sang us the some of the greatest (and sometimes funny) songs. His jokes and stories are legendary, and his guitar pickin' was absolutely out of this world ! I always felt honored when he played for me, and I'll be forever amazed how easy he made it look. Peaceful, loving, caring, talented, and that great smile he had . That's how I will always remember my friend Duke Snow.... Rest Easy

What a beautifully written story of a man I'm proud to call my Uncle , even if it's only by name. Kelly's FB post was also so very touching and true. He was such a unique man, you don't find such humbleness or selflessness people in this world. We've lost such an inspirational mentor, teacher, counselor, conscientious and TRUE man. My heart aches for myself even though I know we weren't close (in proximity),everyone busy with their lives. But it also aches for those he loved dearly. You are like family to me. Please yell me if there's anything I can do. Love to all!!!!
