Johnny Shumans was a man of music. He directed the Statesboro High School Jazz band. We played great music during my time there from 1975 to 1977. He had us attend a Maynard Ferguson concert that included the great Clark Terry. Magic. It wasn't till years later than a appreciated all the music he introduced to us.

Shearon and the Shumans Family

My prayers are with you in the loss of Johnny. May you find comfort in the many years you shared. I fondly recall Johnny in the 80s as a bus driver and travel companion for the GSU Upward Bound Students. He was always full of life and joy. Peace and blessings.

While I was never musically talented, Mr Shumans never gave up on me. He was a great teacher and I have always remembered him fondly. RIP!

Heaven has gained a musically gifted angel and a wonderful man. Well over 40 years ago, Mr. Shumans welcomed me to William James Junior High and the band program even though I didn't play a band instrument. My family and I had just moved from Savannah where I had been playing in a string program. Mr. Shumans assured my family that if they could come up with a band instrument, he would see that I learned to play it. The next four years of my band life were memorable, largely because of Mr. Shumans and his tireless work on our behalf. He shaped us into award-winning musicians who never (. . . okay maybe rarely) complained even though we practiced in the South Georgia summer heat in preparation for the coming school year. Mr. Shumans inspired us; we admired him. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Shumans was a good man, very musically talented, but also someone whom students admired and looked up to. We lost touch with him over the past few years, but have thought of him often. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Johnny, lovingly known as "Jelly Roll" among our Ga. Southern Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity brothers, was always a smiling face and a joy to be around. We played many a job together clubbing with Emma Kelly or the Savannah Symphony. He was quite a trombone player. I'm glad I was able to keep up with him right up to the end. He will surely be missed by many.
