Frank Winkler Obituary

Frank A. Winkler Frank A. Winkler passed from this earthly life on January 26, 2007. He was born in Lebanon, Ohio on May 31, 1923. Left to cherish Frank's memory is his wife, Evelyn, to whom he has been happily married since August 12, 1945. Also surviving is his only son Frank Alan Winkler; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Winkler. Others who grieve for the loss of Frank are his half-sister, Martha and her husband Bill Hoover, as well as a half-brother, Dr. Gerald Lloyd and his wife, Jeannie. He will also be greatly missed by his church family at Saguaro Christian Church, where Frank was an elder emeritus. Frank was a World War II veteran who was a proud recipient of the distinguished Purple Heart. He also represented the U.S. military as a civilian technical advisor during the Vietnam War. As a result of his service during the Vietnam War, Frank was the first civilian employee to receive the coveted "U.S. Army, Vietnam Certificate of Achievement" normally awarded exclusively to military personnel for "significant contributions to the U.S. operations in Vietnam". The award was originated and signed personally by Creighton W. Abrams, General, United States Army Commanding. Educated at the University of Dayton and Sinclair Colleges, Frank was also a graduate of the Navy Management Systems Center at the Naval Post Graduate School. He was a supervisory system analyst for many years. After retirement, Frank and Evelyn moved to Tucson, Arizona. From there they enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world as well as volunteering their expertise at various schools, hospitals and church functions. A memorial service will be held for Frank on Tuesday, January 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Saguaro Christian Church located at 8302 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson, Arizona. Known as "Wink" to his family and friends, we will all savor the times we enjoyed with Frank during his years on earth. May peace engulf all those who hold his memory in their hearts. Rest peacefully, Frank. In lieu of any flowers or contributions, they may be made to the Saguaro Christian Church's youth program.

Frank was my Grandfather, one of the very best. I would spend summers out in Tucson with him and my grandma. I miss him so much and always will. I LOVE YOU Grandpa!

My name is Bryan and I own Arizona Pool & Spa Cleaners. Frank & Evelyn are clients of mine for about two years now, Frank would come out periodically and engage in conversation with me, I could tell by his stories he was an eduacted man, a well travelled man, and also a good husband, father and grandfather. I will miss him coming out and chatting with me while I serviced his pool. Thank you and God Bless Frank!

Frank was very dear to our family, he was grandfather to my son. He spent many summer days accompanying Josh to swim practice at Jesse Owens park, then taking him to his own home to swim with him there. He and Evelyn have always been very doting and involved grandparents and Josh will miss him greatly. You were a wonderful part of our lives, Frank, We will cherish you always.

Frank and I worked together at DESC, the old depot, but best of all were our many days hunting and sitting in a duck blind. A great fellow. I have missed him over these years.

Frank was an old very dear friend of mine who had a great sense of humor and was just plain fun to be around. We worked at DESC in Dayton and he was my boss for many years but most of all he was my friend. Although I haven't seen him but once in the last 25 years we have kept in touch via long letters at Christmas and talked on the phone quite often. I will forever remember my old friend!
