Richard Boyer Obituary

Richard (Dick) Boyer 85 years old, died October 21, 2006. "He tried to do his best most every day of his life." Dick (dad) was a wonderful and lasting example of husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was as tough as the mountains in which he spent most of his life as a National Park Ranger. His last position was Superintendent of Saguaro National Park, having spent time in Washington DC, Lassen Volcanic NP, Rocky Mountain NP, Kennesaw Mountain NBP and Sequoia & Kings Canyon NP. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 9th Armored Division, WWII, surviving, among others, the Battle of the Bulge. To some he was Daniel Boone and Paul Bunyan in one. To others the soft, quiet, firm voice of incredible intellect and calming reason. He loved as he lived with certainty and considerable intensity. Dick is now without pain and worry, sitting beside Jesus, still watching over his loved ones, but missed nonetheless. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, three children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and another "bun in the oven." At Dick's request there will be no services. Cremation arrangements are by Arizona Cremation Society. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, (2021 N. Kinney Rd., Tucson, AZ 520-883-2702), where most of the Texas and Georgia part of the family surely belong.

Dear Alice Lee & Family,
Holle joins me in sending our condolences and expressing our deepest sympathy to all of you at this time of your loss. As you know, Dick was very special to me and the entire Cook Family -- just as you are Alice Lee. We will miss him greatly and think of him every time we come to Tucson. Just knowing he was five houses up the street from Mom & Dad's house all these years was comforting. Every time I came home on leave -- and all the years afterwards -- Dick was alway waiting to hear Army stories, swap hunting tales and recommend (and often give me) books to read. There is also an M1 Garand in my safe that will always be Dick Boyer's rifle. I cherish this "old soldier" of a rifle and knowing it was once Dicks makes it special. So . . . so long old friend. You were a fine representation of the National Park Service and, long ago, the Unites States Army. I shall always be grateful that you were my friend.
Garry Owen, Sir!

Sorry to hear that another of my old NPS freinds has gone on. I remember Dick and Alice Lee when I was a seasonal ranger at Ash Mountain in 1952-53. We had a common friend, John Rutter, who was the first ranger I ever met. I ran into Dick in later years while he was in the Washington Office and I was Supt. at Wind Cave NP. I can remember being at their house at Ash Mountain and the racoons came begging in the evening. Best of everything to Alice Lee and the family. Les and Wanda McClanahan

To all his family members and friends near and far, please sign this with whatever you remember about our dad. Anecdotes or what is on your heart will be read and appreciated by us all.

e.g. I met a real estate developer in Georgia who instantly knew me as I introduced myself because of a run-in he'd had with Dad when he was the Superintendent of Kennesaw Mountain. It seems this person had unfortunately taken a shortcut cross Federal property with his bulldozer and Dad caught him. I'm sure this developer never forgets that incident when having his men take a dozer off his trucks. Dad was very tough and at the same time so very gentle.
