Bennie Gonzales Obituary

Bennie M. Gonzales Architect F.A.I.A. was born in Phoenix Arizona on June 11, 1924. He passed away on November 20, 2008, after a long illness, in the loving arms of his wife of 22 years, Diane. He is survived by his wife, Diane Gonzales; a son, Barney Gonzales; a daughter, Bianca Borman and many loving family members, friends and colleagues. Bennie was 84 years old. He will be greatly missed. He touched many people during his lifetime and the many beautiful buildings he designed and paintings he painted are a lasting memory to his wonderful life. After 35 years of running a professional practice in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, winning many national awards and acting as a consultant to some of the largest Architectural firms in the world. He decided to move to Nogales, Arizona, where he spent many summers as a boy, visiting his grandmother and cousins. Bennie had worked on many products in Nogales early in his career, most notably, The Nogales Public Library. Since moving to Nogales, 20 years ago, he found it possible to practice architecture on a smaller scale, still designing homes in Arizona and projects in Mexico. His remarkable resume including such Valley structures as the Scottsdale Conference Center; The masterplan for The Boulders Hotel in Carefree, AZ; the "diamond in the box" National Bank adjacent to the Biltmore Fashion Park; the Ocotillo Branch Library; the Gloria Dei Church in Paradise Valley; the Saint Elizabeth Seaton Catholic Church and Community Center in Sun City; The Saint Pius the X Church in Tucson and many beautiful homes. His former Paradise Valley home, was featured in Life Magazine. He also designed a palace for King Kahalid of Saudi Arabia. In Prescott he designed the Yavapai Junior College. In California he designed the Palm Desert Civic Center; and in Mexico he designed The Los Sabalos Resort and Conference Center Hotel in Mazatlan. Bennie served in the US Coast Guard during World War II and burial will be in Phoenix, AZ, at the Veterans National Cemetery, as were his wishes. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

Diane:
Forty years ago I was fortunate to work for Bennie. In many ways he was the most creative Arcihitect I worked for during my apprenticing. He recognized my enthusiasm for his workand gave me the task of leading the Scottsdale Civic CenterProject. It was a magnificent adventure.
I could not begin to describe the impact it had on my development. Few architects would have dared to create a Civic Center as he did:even fewer understood what he was trying to accomplish. I will always hold him close to my heart; and remember his "art spirit". He was a man, frustrated by useless "rules" imposed upon people with vision. We must hope there will more who are like him. My very best to you and all of your family.

Diane,
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I met Bennie late in his life, about twelve years ago while bidding as a young general contractor on one of his projects here in Santa Cruz County. He was quick to let me know that I was the third generation Sparling he had met, having worked with my developer father in Carefree and civil engineer grandfather in Phoenix dating back to the forties. He was a mentor and good friend, always offering guidance and direction. I will always cherish his many colorful stories. What a life and, what a man!

Aunt Diane,
My deepest sympathy to you and my cousins. I am so glad that I got to see my uncle before he passed away. I know that my dad and Uncle Bennie are now sharing stories with each other. My uncle is probably designing a new entry gate into heaven and my dad can hardly wait to build it. You are in my prayers.

Bennie Gonzales, FAIA, inspired my entire generation of young architects to become bolder, to reach a little higher, and to dream a little bigger. Bennie was a giant in our profession. We have lost so many of the Fellows of the AIA in recent years, yet Bennie was so unique in his Arizona legacy and sits at the center of our southwestern celebration of late 20th century Sonoran architecture. Our entire southwest culture is so much richer because of his artistry and contributions to our architecture.

Bob and I are so sorry to hear of Bennie's passing. I remember him throughout my childhood, especially when he visited my family in L.A. when he was in the Coast Guard. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Syl (Cahill) Purdy

Diane, you won't know us, but 4 psychiatrists got together in the 50's and hired Bennie to make plans for an office building on Camelback Rd. and 34th street in Phoenix. They called it the Rush Building after Benjamin Rush who signed the Declaration of Independence, a psychiatrist of the time. (We had all gone to Nogales to see the Library there.) After Rush was completed (and how proud we were), Bennie helped my husband and me plan a major remodeling of our home, including a gazebo out past the pool---still standing, and we're still in our home after 48 years. We will always remember him fondly, and the unusual skills and unique designs he created, and his pleasant demeanor. Dr. Derald and Betty May
