David Standifer Obituary

TUSCALOOSA David Brian Standifer, 38, an employee of The New York Times Company, died on May 28, 2010, at home, following a brief illness. The funeral will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Garrett officiating and Sharon Standifer giving the eulogy. The burial service will follow at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Born on July 14, 1971, in Tuscaloosa, he was the son of Karen and Robert L. Standifer, Tuscaloosa. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Robert Jeffrey Standifer, Tuscaloosa; his niece, Faith Elizabeth Standifer, Tuscaloosa; two aunts, Cynthia Ruiz-Fornells (Enrique), Tuscaloosa; and Andrea Coleman, Greenville; his uncle, James T. Standifer (Doris), Tuscaloosa; and eight first cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Porter Standifer, Holt; and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Young, Tuscaloosa; his aunts, Katherine Standifer deVasher, Tuscaloosa; and Judy Giles, Fort Myers, Fla.; and his Aunt Andrea's husband, Toby Coleman, Greenville. He is also survived by his Aunt Katherine's husband, Henry deVasher, Spanish Fort; and his Aunt Judy's husband, Dr. Roy Giles, Fort Myers.

A 1989 graduate of Holt High School, Mr. Standifer was an art student at the University of Alabama, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic art in 1995, and his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1997. A high point of his graduate art studies was his highly acclaimed art exhibit at Clark Hall, focusing on family photographs and objects of personal sentiment acquired during his growing up.

From 1997-2008, Mr. Standifer was a graphic designer with Drake Printers, Tuscaloosa. In 2008, he was employed by The New York Times Company as a graphic artist, working at The Tuscaloosa News locale until his passing. In recent times, he also worked with Prestige Pools, Northport.

From 1990-2010, he was the popular host for a program on WVUA Radio called “'The Metal Zone' with Dave, the Metal Guy.” In 2009, the University of Alabama awarded him a certificate of recognition for his having hosted a UA radio music program longer than any other disc jockey. The award was also for his having mentored future music industry professionals, including disc jockeys. Since the late 1980s, he played drums in a local band known for its alternative rock, performing in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas.

Mr. Standifer was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church, having joined in 1983. He appreciated and enjoyed his family and friends, metal music, photography, cats, birds and other members of the natural kingdom.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Lee, Joe Pritchard, Jeff Todd, Jim Standifer, Jr., Gary Standifer, Jim Bunnelle, Albert Arenas and Mike Clevenger.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Jones, “Lynam,” Sidney Johnson, Wendy Cochran Holman, employees of The Tuscaloosa News, employees of Prestige Pools and members of the Holt United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that any memorials be given to the Holt United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 40655, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404; to an animal protection or music charity of one's choice.

Bobby, Karen and Jeff, I am so sorry for your loss. I had not known about this guest book until today. I still and will always miss Dave, he was a great friend to me and he was a very funny guy with a great personality. Unfortunately I never did get to meet him in person but we sure did talk on the phone a lot about music and life. He was a wonderful person that cared so much about others and would always call on the Holidays to wish my daughter and I the best. He will never be forgotten. God Bless Dave and his wonderful family!!

David has been gone almost 11 months now and I still can't believe it. The night of the wake, there were over 400 Metal Heads there. I met so many that are now special friends. I never liked heavy metal music, more Big Band sound. I tried to teach him the correct way to hold drum sticks. He laughed and said he would do it his way. He did. I stuck with the sax. We still haven't sold his house and I just go there to talk to him. Thanks for being his friend. His Dad,Bob

Bobby, Karen, and Jeff, I know how much you miss Dave and how much it hurts not to have him here with us anymore. Take condolence in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior. He was loved by many and still loved by those who went first. I will always remember him as being in my corner just like a little brother. Love to all, Wendy Speed

Dave,

As I sit here in Baghdad awaiting your Facebook response, it was finally brought to my attention that you are no longer here with us in reality. I just happened to be searching for some old Alabama friends and thought of you. I sent you a message with memories of when we used to play music together in your basement. Those days at West End Christian are long gone but still dwell in my mind as if they were just yesterday.

Take care, and I apologize for not staying in touch better than I should have. I love you like a brother.

Sincerely, B. Owens Daniels

To Bobby, Karen and Jeff:

Please except my prayers and love for your great loss. I loved reading the comments about David. He was certainly a son and brother to be proud of. Was David with you at Kentuck that time, Karen? Or was that Jeff? I hope to see you next trip to T-Town. We seldom make the trip except for occasional family reunions.

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die."
John 11:25,26

What a marvelous promise for David, and for all of us!

I love you. I miss you. My heart is always trying to sync up with yours and when it can't find you, I feel like it stops beating. You brought me to life. You made me so happy. You taught me so much about life, patience, kindness, and what love is supposed to be. Every moment with you was a gift. You are the kindest, gentlest, sweetest, most genuine human being I have ever met and I'll never stop missing your heartbeat. I love you.

R.I.P. While I never remember meeting Dave since I was out of Tuscaloosa when he took over the show (I hosted Total Destruction from 1985-1987 when I graduated from UA), he took something I loved and made it greater.

I used to talk to Dave every single Monday at 2 PM ET for six years when I did radio at Roadrunner and he hosted his show. We became friends beyond our professional dealings and we even continued talking all the time when I switched departments. We talked about so much through the years. The first and only time we met was in Alabama when I was in town for the Furnace Fest in 2002 and he came to hang out with Jessica from Universal and I and he even gave us some tips on local sites to see, such as the Ave Maria Grotto! He will be missed; he was a good, good dude.

"I am so sorry to hear about Dave's passing". I've known him for at least 14 years as a man who was passionate about music. He helped us break a lot of bands into the mainstream over the years. We will miss him dearly. - Cheryl Valentine, Reprise Records (Burbank CA)

Although I never met David, I spoke to him nearly every week for several years. I got to know him fairly well over the years, and outside of his enthusiasm for the music we spoke about, he was a great guy. It's truly shocking and very sad to hear about such an untimely loss. I and everyone else at the Syndicate that worked with him over the years send condolences to his friends and family through this tough time.
