Rolland John SELTZ

Passed away October 13, 2022. His limbs and his memory wore out. He spent the last years of his life at home with his wife, Murt, bedridden in the living room as life swirled around him. From his bed he could look out at the lake, watch sports on TV, visit with friends and family, and participate in traditional holiday gatherings. He was born in McIntosh, MN on January 25, 1924 to Rev. Paul and Regina Seltz. In the 1940s he played professional basketball in the NBA, professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinal organization, and later owned Seltz Insurance Agency. He graduated from Humboldt High School and Hamline University and is in the Athletic Hall of Fame at both schools. His passion was golf at North Oaks GC. He qualified for three national tournaments, and in 1974 won the state doubles tournament with Paul Turner. He is survived by wife of 45 years, Muriel (Murt), and children Kris (Jason) Helgeson, Jane (Stephen) Arsenault, Charlotte (Michael) Ferlic, Ann (John) Nash, Rolland, Jr., Catherine (Alan) Bergland, Corinne Seltz (Douglas Drew), Colleen Seltz (Iain Hendren), Carolyn (Lawrence) McBride, Constance (Vincent) Cecys, Christine Seltz (Norman Dion). Grandchildren: Kate (Ryan) Chadwick, Peter Cecys (Tristan Bunker), Nora Cecys, Marshall, Douglas and Forrest Seltz, Logan (Taylor) McBride, Kelsey (Scott) Butts, Catherine Hendren, Austin, Benjamin and Emily Nash, Hannah (Matthew) Stark, Samuel and Camille Arsenault, Mason, Nolan and Evan Ferlic, Claire, William and Catherine Seltz Drew (fiancé Michael Fesko), Anna and Sophia Bergland, Cole and Annika Helgeson. Great-grandchildren Rowan, Gabriel, Vivienne, Brecken and Colton. Sister Mary Hendrickson (John Krogman). Sister-in-law Rosalie Seltz, and ever faithful friend Howard Hass. He is preceded in death by brothers Paul, Richard and Douglas, sister Eunice, and former wife, Florence Elliott. Funeral service Thursday, October 20, 11:30 a.m. at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 4880 Hodgson Road, Shoreview, MN. Reviewal beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment with family will be held at a later time. Memorials preferred to Incarnation Lutheran Church, or the Alzheimer's Association.
