GAIL PETERSON
November 24, 2019
Bill and I were professional colleagues at the U of M for many years. He was the most meticulous basic brain-science researcher I have ever known, and as a result, the findings he reported with respect to the hard problems he tackled were always rock solid and will stand at the foundation of the field forever. He was widely respected for his scientific and technical contributions throughout the world. Bill was also a no-nonsense teacher, and those who were fortunate enough to study under him received a thorough grounding in neuroscience. He was equally as disciplined and conscientious in his committee work within the Department of Psychology, the College of Liberal Arts, and the University of Minnesota writ large. And I remember well him telling me, quite excitedly, about his genealogical research, and how his goal there was to go beyond the usual names and dates and geographic locations and to develop fuller portraits of who each of his ancestors was as an individual person in terms of their unique, personal life experiences, aspirations, challenges, achievements, satisfactions, philosophies of life, etc., -- the nitty gritty of real lives lived out over years of time. I remember that vividly because Bill was usually such a quiet and private person, but he was quite effusive about his interest in genealogy, and I am so pleased to learn that he had the opportunity to fully enjoy that endeavor in his later years. He was a remarkable and memorable person, I feel extremely fortunate to have known him.
