Sophie Wilson Obituary

EXETER - Sophie Byk Wilson, with her husband of 68 years by her side, died peacefully on March 24, 2013, at Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood.

Born in Manchester, on Sept. 4, 1921, Sophie was the daughter of Walter and Antonina Byk. She attended Manchester Central High School and the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1942. Following graduation, she moved to Groveton, where she taught high school social studies. There she met Francis (Frank), her future husband. The couple married in Key West, Fla., in 1945. While Frank served in the U.S. Navy, Sophie worked for the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., and joined the Army Signal Corps.

After returning to New Hampshire, Sophie spent the next 20 years raising her children. When she returned to teaching, she taught French at Epping High School for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983. Sophie will forever be remembered as "Madame Wilson" to her students. After retirement, she volunteered her time at the Senior Center in Exeter, Exeter Hospital, and tutored those in need of Polish language instruction. She was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Exeter.

Sophie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy.

She was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Cushman, grandson Christopher Wilson, and brother Joseph Byk.

I will always remember "Madame" as one of the best teachers I ever had at Epping High. Sometimes in French class it would get a little "noisy" with our discussions and all of a sudden we would notice "Madame" standing there with her arms crossed and a foot tapping on the floor. Needless to say, we would quiet right down. She will be missed.

Madame was a wonderful teacher to so many children. I was very fortunate to have her as my french teacher for several years. I will always remember her warm smile as we entered her classroom everyday. She was a very special person and she will always live in our hearts.

To Cristine and family; I am holding you in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sadness and loss. I met "Gram" the first time at Cristine's wedding in NH. I remember her making her famous "Cinnamon Chick Muffins" for me and we joked with her about her love of moose. She was a very loving and caring lady and I can only imagine the sense of loss this brings to your family. She will be greatly missed but always remembered. Love,
Jill

I will always remember Madame's passionate and caring teaching. She didn't let you get away with anything and always made sure she had your attention. "No franglais Robert"!
A great teacher and a great lady.
Au Revoir Madame, Dieu vous benisse.
