Herbert Edwards Obituary

GOFFSTOWN - Herbert Ralph Edwards, 73, of Goffstown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at his home after fighting cancer for five years.

Herbert was born on Oct. 19, 1941, in Burlington, Vt., the son of the late Herbert Chester and Charlotte (Kirby) Edwards. Following his high school graduation, Herbert joined the Navy and qualified in submarines in 1961. He served on the USS Growler (SSG-755), USS Graylock (SSG-574), and USS Diodon (SS-349). He transferred to the Seabees after 10 years in the submarines and then finished his service in the Army National Guard. Herbert retired from the military after 23 years of faithful service.

Herbert was a member of the USSV1 Lockwood Internet Base and the Wilson Hill Pistol Club. He received his certificate of Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University and was a volunteer as an AARP tax aide for many years.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Athena LaFlamme-Edwards; three children, Tamara Michels of Smugglers' Notch, Vt., Elizabeth Ludwig of Panama City, Fla., and Joseph Edwards of Tucson, Ariz.; three stepchildren, James Goulette of Manchester, April Bogdanowicz of Dunbarton, and Crystal Rivers of Milton; foster daughter, Cadet Alise Berry, of the Citadel Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stephen Edwards of Burlington, Vt., and Jay Edwards of Keller, Texas. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Wayne Edwards.

SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be held in the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Committal at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery will be announced at a later date.In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Herbert's memory to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250, or Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741.For further information, please visit www.csnh.com.

Cant believe it has been 4 years since Herb passed away. I enjoyed knowing him through his mom Charlotte and her husband Cliff Japhet. I hope he is at peace and patiently waiting for Athena and others to follow him.

Herb was the one who helped me when I joined the WHPC a few years ago. I was a bit nervous, being new to the sport, and Herb made me feel welcome and instilled confidence in me. Indeed a man with kindness and meaning. My sincere condolences to you.
