SIDNEY - Jean Stratton Bartley, at the age of 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 14, 2020 at the Dorothy Love Retirement Community in Sidney, Ohio. Jean was born in Jackson, Michigan to Delbert and Eliza Stratton on July 27, 1924. Jean graduated from Jackson High School in 1942 and from Akron University in 1946. On August 6, 1949 Jean married F. Earl Bartley.
After teaching first grade for 5 years, Earl and Jean moved to Columbus, Ohio. During the next four years her sons, David, John and Russell were born. Earl got a job at Grimes in Urbana, Ohio in 1956. They lived in Urbana until the fall of 1996 when they moved to the Dorothy Love Retirement Community in Sidney, Ohio.
Jean had a very active church life. In Urbana and in Sidney she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She taught grade school children in Sunday School most of her life. She was also active with the church women. Some of her volunteering time was with the Head Start program in Urbana, Ohio and tutoring adults to read.
She enjoyed knitting, arranging flowers and reading. Until recently, Jean sent out many letters and cards. Jean loved spending time with family and would always have a craft for the younger ones.
Surviving Jean are her sons David (Kathy), John (Mary) Russell (Holly), six grandchildren, one step-grandchild, thirteen great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, a brother James, and a sister-in-law Sue. Preceding her in death were her parents Delbert and Eliza, her husband Earl, a brother John Stratton and a sister Joyce (Art) Dobkin along with a sister in-law Naomi Stratton.
In honoring Jean's wishes she will be cremated and her ashes placed in the Urbana Cemetery.
