Barry Scott Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Sep. 6 to Sep. 7, 2008.

SCOTT Barry Alistair RobertsonJuly 8, 1932 - August 23, 2008 Barry died suddenly from a heart attack on August 23, 2008. He was born in West Point Grey, Vancouver, and lived there all his life, graduating from Lord Byng High School in l950, and then from the University of B.C. with a B.A. in l954. As a student, he worked in the UBC Bookstore, and then continued his permanent employment there in a number of positions until his retirement in 1994. He was popular with both students and faculty; and in particular for performing the complex task of supervising the gowns and regalia for all students in all degrees at the graduation ceremonies. Barry understood the importance of graduation to the graduates and their families, and did everything in his power to help make their graduation day perfect. He was advisor, tailor, fashion consultant and occasionally family peacemaker for the thousands of UBC grads who were "gowned" by him. In l990 , he was awarded a special medal at the 75th UBC anniversary celebration for his long service to the University, and in l992 he was again recognized with the President's Service Award for Excellence. He was a long-time member of the 25 Year Club at UBC and was the President of that organization in l994. In retirement he travelled extensively, he maintained his connections with his Bookstore fellow-employees, and was a consistent attender at the Byng Class of '50 reunions. Barry was predeceased by his parents Allison and Bryant Scott, and by his sisters Beverley and Karen. He was a favorite uncle to Karen Davies and Kenneth Davies (Maria), and Brad Tingley (Wanda) and Katannya Kaylor. He will also be greatly missed by great-nephews Christopher and Bennett Tingley, Nicholas and Jeremy Davies, and Jonathan and Jason Davies, and by great-great nephew Riley Davies. There will be a Celebration of Life at Brock House, Vancouver, on September 20th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a spoken service at noon for family, friends, workmates and classmates. The family would also like to thank Dr. Henry Chong for his long service as Barry's physician. Donations may be made in his memory to the charity of your choice.

A warm tribute to mark sudden passing of my cousin Barry Scott in Vancouver Friday Aug 23 2008.
We we close first cousins growing up with his loving parents Bryant and Allison, siblings Beverly and Karen who also predeceased.
We spent happy summers at the beach, pickniking or playing games at home on College Highroad.
Though never married, Barry was a real family man who kept in touch with family near a far. His enthusiasm over Expo 86 was contagious and he went everyday.
He was gentle and genial.
Barry and Jim McIntyre best friends from early days traveled widely yet Barry's roots remained firmly planted in West Point Grey, UBC and "The Bookstore"
Barry, we all love you and we will miss you greatly.

"May our good Lord bless and keep you and may his face always shine upon you"

Until we meet again!

Loving cousins - Catherine Scott Belak, Nicholas my husband (Thornhill Ontario), his sister Mary RN. (Vancouver) our son John Paul and his special friend Sara Kreil Eng. (Montreal Quebec)

My Deepest Sympathies to Barry's family. I was Barry's colleaque at the Bookstore from 1971 til his retirement in 1994. Without eqivocation Barry was one of the kindest people I ever had the pleasure of meeting and it was always a pleasure to see him on one of his frequent visits to the Bookstore post his retirement. I will miss him dearly.
