William Welch Obituary

Beloved artist, William H. Welch, lost his battle with multiple myeloma on November 9th, 2018. In a rich career spanning more than 35 years, Bill gained international renown for his evocative work drawing from an expressive passion for light and color in the impressionist tradition.

His work has been represented in galleries throughout the world and is owned by many corporations and private collectors. Bill spent many years in France, where he honed his technique in Normandy, Brittany, and Provence and developed a strong following, with regular shows in Arles and Giverny. One of Bill's great joys was teaching art students all over the world, particularly in the technique of plein air.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 21st, 1947. He received his Bachelor's degree in Graphic and Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1970, and graduate training at Philadelphia College of Art. He is survived by his loving partner, David Fronheiser, his sister, Sherrey Welch, of Venice, Florida, 5 nieces and nephews, 8 grandnieces and grandnephews, 3 step-nieces and step-nephews, and 1 grandstep-nephew.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Swim Across America - Nantucket - PO Box 3271, Nantucket, MA, 02584 or online at www.swimacrossamerica.org/Nantucket.

Plans will be announced at a later date for a celebration of life service in Venice in the Winter and Nantucket in the Spring.

It is hard to believe Bill has been gone for three years. He certainly lives on in his lovely art and in the Nantucket memories we have of him. It was an honor to have met him and to have his prints and painting hang in our home.

Years ago my husband and I became aware of William Welch's fine art. We visited his gallery on Nantucket and enjoyed meeting him there. In the late 80's my husband surprised me with a lovely framed Welch print at Christmas time. The next summer while on island we purchased another to hang with the first. They hang in our living room today. Years later we acquired a small painting which is cherished.

I only realized today, June 6, 2019 of Mr. Welch's death. We send deepest sympathy to his family and close friends.

I was saddened to learn of Bill's passing. I'm sorry for your loss. Though I had known Bill but a short time, he was always welcoming with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Bill would visit faithfully a dear elderly friend where I work. We miss seeing him.

I just left the Frangipani Gallery on Duval Street in KW and was saddened to learn of Mr Welch's passing. I have collected his paintings for a while and was fortunate to have him do a watercolor of my home here, which I will always treasure. A very kind and talented man. He will be missed.
