Samuel Clarendon Myer

1921 - 2013

We lost a kind and gentle soul on Sunday, December 22. Surrounded by his loving family, Samuel Clarendon Myer passed away at Agrace Hospice, in Madison, WI.

He was born December 28, 1921 in Oxnard, California. He spent his boyhood years in Santa Barbara, California and Maine. It was there he met his wife of 67 years, Josefa Whitman. Sam was blessed with a tremendous intellect and a love of learning, a world he explored in high school at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, for undergraduate at Princeton University in Princeton NJ, and for his Masters at New York University.

Upon graduation from Princeton, Sam served as a paratrooper in the 101st division of the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant during WWII.

After the war, Sam and Josefa were married March 18, 1946 at St. Mathew's Episcopal Church in Bedford, New York. Sam, a Certified Financial Analyst, worked many years as an investment banker in New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Hamilton, Bermuda.

Always being a California boy at heart, upon retirement, he and his wife returned to the family farm in Ventura, CA. Then, in 2004, they moved to Madison to be close to their daughters.

He is survived by his loving wife Josefa, his daughters Georgia (Patrick Farmer) Myer of Marshfield, VT, Ginny (Greg) Kester of Madison, WI, and Jody (Tom Lynch) Myer-Lynch of Mount Horeb, WI. He is further survived by his grandchildren: John Kester of Minneapolis MN, Lane Kester of Astoria, OR, Sam Lynch of Mount Horeb, WI and Lydia Lynch of San Luis Obispo, CA.

Sam was also blessed with two nephews, Bert (Anne) Myer, and Carl Myer as well as many Myer and Edwards cousins from across the globe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert James Myer III and Florence Madaline Edwards Myer and his brother Jim (Albert James) Myer.

Also preceding him in death and dear to his heart were his grandmother Gertrude Virginia Myer and his uncle Jack Myer and his aunt Pat Myer Weber.

Sam lived his life with dignity and will be dearly missed by his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agrace Hospice Care, the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools, or The South Central Wisconsin Alzheimer's Association.
