Shelby was born in Oklahoma on Oct. 19, 1936, the daughter of Lawrence and Mae Thompson. After graduating from Oklahoma University, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. She successfully became a contract player for 20th Century Fox and appeared in such classic films as the Fantastic Voyage (1966), Our Man Flint (1966), The Witchmaker (1969), and the Pleasure Seekers (1964). Shelby also had a long list of independent TV appearances on top rated shows like Marcus Welby, M.D., Batman, Bonanza, and multiple appearances on her husband Chad Everett's series Medical Center.

Shelby married actor Chad Everett on May 22, 1966, in Tucson, Ariz., while he was on location filming Return of The Gunfighter. Their daughters, Kate Thorp and Shannon Everett, graduated and attended San Diego State University and University Santa Barbara respectively. Shelby and Chad enjoyed a life of sport and philanthropy together.

Shelby played a mean game of tennis and equally fierce game of Bridge. She was very athletic and enjoyed Pilates, healthy food, and a nice Chardonnay. Shelby has been instrumental in the efforts to provide resources to US Soldiers and for saving the lives of children. Her relentless efforts allowed these children to receive life saving surgeries through the Gift of Life and Loma Linda Hospital. Chad and Shelby have personally sponsored more than 20 heart surgeries for needy children through The Gift of Life. Shelby and Chad recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

Shelby is survived by her husband, Chad Everett; her daughters, Katherine Thorp, from San Rafael, Calif., and Shannon Everett, from Carlsbad, Calif.; her brother, James L. Thompson, from Chula Vista, Calif. Shelby had six grandchildren, Lauren Thorp, Connor Thorp, and Zachary Thorp, all from San Rafael, Calif., and Tosh Everett, Faith Everett, and Dawson Everett, all residing in Carlsbad, Calif. Shelby's ashes are with her family in Westlake Village.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her name to The Gift of Life, 475 Northern Blvd, Suite 22, Great Neck, NY 11021. A private memorial will be held in Westlake Village to celebrate Shelby's life and memory on Saturday, July 2, 2011.

I wrote a message in March about the loss of Shelby & I find it extremely hard to find myself sending one for Chad. Some stars only entertain you but some take up a special place in your heart. That was what Chad & Shelby were to me. I loved their talent but their love for one another, family, friends & yes... I think even their fans made them unique. They never shied away from making contact with all of us. Very rare these days & times. The charity world will have a huge void from losing these two wonderful people. Both my parents are gone so I know the pain you're feeling. Wish I could go thru it for you to save you from the feelings you'll go thru. Cling to each other & help each other thru the rough spots. Holidays & birthdays are the hardest. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that theres lots of folks out here that hurt right along with you for the loss of Chad & Shelby. I finally took time to watch the episodes of Medical Center with both Chad and Shelby sharing the screen together, and then the episode of Shelby in Marcus Welby episode, oh how young you both were back then. How you both stayed so attractive is a mystery to me. God blessed you with so much talent, good looks and a great loving family. I know you will be missed by all. Chad does have a Guest Book of his own if you just ask for it on the internet it will come up. I was so shocked to learn the passing of your father, Chad Everett on Tuesday, July 24th. I know his passing will be mourned by many fans. I loved Medical Center and even had a small part in one of the episodes. He was so kind and thoughtful during the filming and I was so touched by that. Our scene was not a long one, but just being in his presence was a privilage. He was so handsome and I will never forget those amazing blue eyes.

Can't begin to tell u the joy u both gave me thru the years or how much admiration I have for ur devotion to each other, ur family & ur God. Chad, I know it must be horrible dealing with such a huge loss. Just know u & Shelby have devoted fans that are grieving with u & family. Wish there was more I could do to help all thru this time. Still have my book "A Toast To Shelby" that I read from time to time. Our Lord was good to us for having sent u both into our lives & blessed u with awesome talent, loving friends & family & devoted fans that love u. Shelby, sweet, beautiful Shelby, till we meet in heaven..... Chad, if I'm not blessed some day here on earth to meet u I leave u with a saying my family has, Here, There (heaven), or in the Air (at the rapture). May God give all of u the strength & comfort u need...

omg I was just watching the series of you and shelby. Your love for each other was so touching it brought tears to my eyes. Not many can say they truely found their soul mate. chad, u can say i grew up with u watching medical center. im now an adult 52. my condolences 2 u n your family. shelby was an awesome person with such heart! i know loss myself but always remember our loved 1s r looking down @ us smiling with love:} i just watched ur n shelbys love story on youtube, u both were n still r blessed! thats the only way i can watch medical center as well since reruns arent aired on tv here. stay strong n sweet my friend n know u r loved, a friend from central wisconsin... sandy~

Chad I do not know you personally but have been a fan for decades. I lost the love of my life 5 years ago and I know first hand the terrible sorrow that you are feeling. There is a hole in your heart that will never be filled. Those who have not lost a spouse, and especially a spouse with whom you loved from the bottm of your sole, cannot possibly understand the grief that will be with you for the remainder of your life. Im just found out that Shelby Grant Everett was passing away last June 25 , 2011 which I didnt know. Im very sorry to hear about that you Loss of your wife and Mother. Chad and Shelby had a beautiful marriage life and Beautiful family. I have always to remember that Chad Everett and Shelby Grant Everett all the way and remember her that she was played role on Tv show of Medical Center and some Talk show and Game shows and so forth.
And also I did watched The Love Stories about Chad Everett and Shelby Grant Everett on Video. It is so sad to hear about it. Chad and Shelby have been long time marriage with 35 Years Anniversary.

Chad I think of you often since the death of your beautiful Shelby. Wondering how you are handling everyday life without your partner can be so hard. I mentioned before I lost my husband to cancer in 1983 just before Christmas and my daughter was only 12 at the time. It was so hard and I still cry somedays until I fall asleep. It is better as you will find out, but you never forget that part of you that made you whole. All my love and hugs to you to help through this time. I'm sending you a hug right now, can you feel it? Get all the hugs you can from all those loved ones around you, they help so much. Wish I could be there to talk about what I've learned through the years on handling this part of life, but I think you know. Keep busy and remember all your fans still love you and are there for you at anytime you need them.
