Judy Holland Obituary

Judy Lyn Holland

Washington, D.C. — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judy Lyn Holland, 61, of Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2021.

Judy was born Aug. 7, 1959, in Orange Heights, VT, the daughter of Harry and Barbara Holland of Hanover, NH and Vero Beach, FL. Judy was born in the family station wagon en route to the hospital, portending a life in constant motion. From a very young age, Judy adored books and kept a flashlight under the bed covers to read at night. She also displayed an early aptitude for performance and enlisted neighborhood children to put on shows in the family garage with a blanket as stage curtains. She later became an accomplished figure skater and continued to perform in college and as an adult.

She attended Hanover High School and graduated in 1977. Her first summer job was as a cashier at Dan & Whit's General Store on the same block in Norwich, VT where she grew up. She continued her education at Middlebury College, where she graduated with a BA in 1981. From there, Judy taught English at a boarding school in Germany and studied Italian in Florence, becoming fluent in both languages. She worked as a paralegal in a New York City law firm before earning her master's degree in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

During her 30-year journalism career, Judy was a newspaper reporter at the Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum, Pa. and the Tampa Tribune in Florida before moving to Washington, DC to become a Capitol Hill correspondent for States News Service. She spent 13 years covering the US Senate and as national bureau editor at Hearst Newspapers, the storied newspaper chain that includes the Houston and San Francisco Chronicles and the Boston Globe. She won the Hearst Eagle Award, the chain's highest honor. Judy was elected president of the National Press Club Foundation and was a member of the Capitol Speakers Club. She also appeared as a political commentator on cable TV news. Her stories appeared in dozens of publications.

She also was the founder and editor of parentinsider.com, an online magazine about parenting teens and wrote the book and podcast series HappiNest: Finding Fulfillment When Your Kids Leave Home.

Judy met her husband John K. Starr, an orthopedic surgeon, in 1982, when he was a medical student. They were together for nearly 40 years, married since 1990. Her true pride and joy were her beloved children, whom she taught determination, poise and empathy.

Judy is survived by her husband John, children Lindsay, 27, Maddie, 24, and Jack, 22, her parents; sister Mary Anne Holland, brothers Michael (Heidi); Joe (Becky); and Jim (Analea); sister-in-law Patricia Starr; nieces Jeannie, Greta, Hazel, Lizzie and Juniper; nephews Michael, Timothy, Hunter, Jake and Anders; maternal uncle, Don Johnston (Mary Margaret) and paternal uncle, Clark Holland.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held May 11 at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC following Covid-19 guidelines.

Judy´s passing is still fresh in our minds. A life well lived now at peace in the arms of the Lord. Praying that her family, although forever mourning her absence, has found consolation in the loving memories left behind by having been so blessed to have shared in her amazing life.

Dear John and Family: I am sorry to hear of Judy's passing. I know how much Chuck Lewis respected her as a journalist and a vibrant member of the Hearst team. He loved "kibitzing" with her because she always had the relentless energy and inside gossip. Sadly, Chuck passed before her at the end of March but would have wanted me to let you know how much he valued her friendship and work. I hope the wonderful memories we all share of her will hold your family through these days of loneliness and sorrow. My deepest sympathy.

Just learned of Judy's passing. She sat in the desk in front of mine at the Tampa Tribune's Spring Hill Bureau. We worked on a Weeki Wachee Spring story together & she smiled all the way through the assignment. She was a wonderful person and missed her when she & John moved on. Prayers to the family.... May she rest in peace...

Judy was a vibrant, brilliant, funny, energetic and caring woman. She will be sorely missed by the Dunning family who came to know her through the St. Albans community, where our youngest son played sports with her son, Jack. Her support of the soccer team, and tireless devotion not just to her family, but to all those in her orbit, was remarkable. We are deeply sorry for her untimely passing and send all our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies to the entire Starr family.

Dr Starr -Judy was very lucky to have you for a husband! She sounds like such an accomplished woman -I suspect her marriage to you was primary in her life! I loved working with you all those years - respected your desire for “space”-I am so very sorry for your loss. My husband passed away in December-let all your friends and family be there to support you. My prayers for you and your family!

Vivacious, funny, adored by everyone. I was President of Capital Speakers Club when Judy graduated. I remember her enticing speech with her husband John in the audience looking at her so adoringly. Afterwards at lunch we sat at the same table with John at her side. My husband is an orthopedic surgeon like John. I remember thinking I didn’t know orthopedic surgeons could look at their wives with such love and infatuation. That day set a whole new bar for my husband. When we had our Venetian masquerade Ball Judy and John were there glowing in their costumes. When we had our Hollywood theme ball, they came as handsome pirates dressed to the nines. We all loved being with Judy and John. Her spirit was lively and generous. We are all hurting by the loss of this beautiful soul.
