Terri C. Dudley

Lebanon, NH — Terri C. Dudley, 92, passed away Monday, May 31, 2021.

Terri was born March 20, 1929 in Lebanon, NH to Pauline Crawford and Frank Whitehouse. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Wendell Gray.

Terri was a 1947 graduate of Lebanon High School. She received her Associate Degree from Lebanon College in 1999, at the age of 70.

She married Roger Lloyd Dudley in March of 1947 at the First Baptist Church in Lebanon, NH. He predeceased her in December of 2019.

She was employed by the Valley News from 1957, starting as a reporter and retiring as the Advertising Director in 1994. During that time, she served in a number of capacities, including authoring a popular column called Terri's Topics, which she occasionally used to embarrass her children. From 1995 until 2010, she was the host of "Your Turn", a talk show on WTSL, in which she interviewed people from all walks of life, including many local authors, state and local public figures, and presidential candidates.

Terri was very involved in the City of Lebanon. She cared deeply for the city and people of Lebanon. She was on the Planning board, served as a City Councilor for many years, Assistant Mayor, and Mayor. The city honored her in 2009, dedicating the bridge over the Mascoma River, between Lebanon and West Lebanon, to her.

She was also a NH State representative, serving as Clerk of the Judiciary Committee.

Terri was the first woman president of the NE Newspaper Advertising Executives. She served in NENAE for 18 years, ten on the Board of Directors. She was also presented a lifetime membership by the New England Newspaper Association.

She became the first woman member of the Lebanon Rotary in 1991, first woman president of the Lebanon Rotary, first woman president of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce and served 20 years as a Board member, and served as president and Board member of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce.

She was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, and was made Trustee Emeritus upon leaving that board. She was also on the Board of Harvest Hill.

She was also on the Board of Directors of the United Way of the Upper Valley, a member of the governing Board of the Grafton County Senior Citizen Council, served as chairman of the court diversion program for Lebanon, was on the Board of Directors for LISTEN, was a Trustee of Lebanon College from 2000 through 2004 and served as nominating committee chair, and was Lebanon's Citizen of the Year in 1994. She was listed in Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in Communications, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in American Politics and honored by the NE Newspaper Association with a lifetime membership.

Terri and Roger also cared for five foster children.

In addition to her husband, Roger, Terri was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Marilyn Truman and Carlene Dow; and her daughterinlaw, Suzette Dudley.

Terri is survived by her children, Sharron Smardon (Steve Corbeil), Michael Dudley, and Jo Ann Langone (Stephen); four grandchildren, Kim Bailey (Greg), Michael Smardon (Sherry), Roger Hodgdon (Fong), Stephanie Bramhall (Adam); five greatgrandchildren, Dylan and Taylor Bailey, Rajchel and Alexandra Smardon, and Azra Hodgdon; her brother, Earle Gray (Jackie); numerous nieces and nephews, and several very dear friends.

Terri and Roger were very special friends to Wesley and I for many years and I worked closely with Terri at City Hall when I was employed there. She loved her City and was very infIuential while serving on the City Council. I will always remember our close association. I'd like the family know I am thinking of them during this difficult time.

The last time I saw Terri she grabbed me off the street to come talk, when they’d moved to School Street. We talked over an hour, about everything. Terri was the binder between Lebanon and West Lebanon, and I was happy to be the prime sponsor for the bill that named the “new” bridge between the two after her, and to get it done before the legislature decided to make naming only after death. She gave a lot to our community her whole life, and received back in kind.

I met Terri in the mid-80s when I applied for a job at the Valley News. I wasn't hired because Terri said I was over-qualified! Several years later I got a job at Lebanon City Hall and had many wonderful and memorable encounters with Terri. She was also my "down the street neighbor". I loved watching her interact with the public; she listened to each and every word and took action when needed. She got the job done! I will always cherish my friendship with Terri. RIP sweet lady!

First and foremost I want to send my condolences to the Dudley family on the huge loss of a wonderful person who touched so many people's lives and did so much for her family and her second family, the City of Lebanon. From my contact with Terry, it was easy to see she was a great wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. I first met Terry Dudley when I was hired by the Lebanon Police Department as a police officer in 1985. At the time she was a City councilor and a bail commissioner as well. When I met with her for various official tasks, she was always very pleasant, personal, and caring. She would always inquire as to how I was doing and inquire of my family as well. I was saddened to see she had passed away as I had lost contact with her and was unaware of her whereabouts. I wish to say to the entire Dudley family both immediate and extended that you can be very proud of her and that she is and will be a wonderful and caring person. Again, my prayers and condolences to the family for their loss. The smile on her face says it all.

Terri was so kind to me when I started at the Valley News in 1984. And as the other female regular in the basketball pool, I was in awe of her strategy to just buy every team. It worked for her. I also loved hearing her voice on the radio. She was one of a kind.
