I only learned of Charlie's death today (August 13). I am so sorry. Charlie was one of the kindest people I met in my 35 year association with the service, and one of the best and fairest professionals. We all have lost a ray of sunlight in our days.

A brilliant practitioner of our age-old craft, steeped in knowledge and understanding, and yet so humble at his core. His lasting impression was one deep kindness and a luminous joy in life and in those around him. Goodbye, old friend. You will always be with us.

I can't say I knew Charlie well enough to call him a friend, but I certainly considered him one as did my husband. I always looked forward to that smile of his and the joy that just emanated from him; it was contagious. There really are not many like Charlie and I feel like I am a better person for having met and worked with him. There are limited times in our lives when we know we are in the presence of someone who is good through and through, Charlie was that guy. My family is praying for your family, for grace and mercy in the passing of such a wonderful man. Fair winds and following seas, my friend.

One in a million - a man for all seasons, all people, Charlie made the world a much better and safer place in which to live.
I was devastated to hear the news of his sudden passing. I had the honor of working several years abroad with him. He made an indelible impression on everyone he met. He will be greatly missed forever in our hearts.
My deepest condolences to Mary, Charlie, Matthew and Christine.

RIP Sir Charles, you were a hero, friend, and mentor to Cynthia and me. You were the true Lawrence of Arabia, with an understanding of the culture and people of the Middle East that was unmatched in the USG. We worked for you in New York, Cairo, and Baghdad, visited with you in Amman, and had an amazing 2 weeks in the Cape with all of our families after we all returned from Baghdad. All of these memories we will cherish forever. I am so happy I spoke to you at the end of April, as that last conversation I will cherish forever. God bless you and your wonderful family; the world is a better place because of your presence on it.

Mary, you and your family are in our prayers. What an awesome human being your man was. We are all better off with the contributions and sacrifices Charlie made for our country. Always remember his contagious smile and how he loved you. Made everyone he met feel special. May you all be comforted in the days ahead, even finding Joy in the midst of sorrow.

I first met Charlie when he accompanied his dad and me to a funeral service for a leading Iranian military official at a mosque in Iran. Although still in his young student years, he showed great understanding and respect of those of the Islamic faith, as I expect many of his friends of that religion are now showing to him in his passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, and especially to his sister, Anne.

Larger than life our Charlie! Our world is a better place as a result of his dedication and work, as well as providing us with such a wonderful family in Mary, Charlie, Mathew and Christine. May the pain and grief of our loss be softened by celebrating the many happy memories of what a stellar special man he was.
