EDWARD PRINCE Obituary

PRINCE EDWARD MINOR PRINCE Edward Minor Prince, Senior Counsel and trademark specialist of Alston & Bird, athlete, devoted husband, father and grandfather, died on April 20, 2018 from complications of multiple myeloma at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md. He was 80. A lifelong Washingtonian, born on May 3, 1937, the first son of his Alabama-born father and Connecticut-born mother, Edward (Ted) Prince, embodied Southern charm and Northern efficiency. He attended Woodberry Forest School, Yale University and the University of Virginia law school. After law school, he served in the Army because he felt it was important to enlist. He married his law school sweetheart Sally Mathiasen and began his legal career at Cushman Darby & Cushman, practicing Intellectual Property law, and later moved his practice to Alston & Bird. At Yale and beyond, he excelled at sports. He played on the varsity tennis and squash teams at Yale - winning a National Championship in 1958. This began his lifelong love of sports and competition - whatever the game. He held two significant local records: winning all three of the Tennis, Golf and Paddle Tennis Championships at the Chevy Chase Club throughout his 20s and 30s and, at age 74, winning Senior Golf Championships at three different clubs in a single year. His fiercest competition, however, was always left to playing against his father, his sons, his son- in-law, his grandsons or his sons' friends - 25 or 30 years his junior - where his competitive drive was on display the most, especially if $2 were on the line. He and Sally started a family in Chevy Chase, raising three children - Jackie, Ted Jr. and Christian and spending summers on Pleasant Lake in New Hampshire. He had an enviable life until February 17, 1991 when Christian (a Yale sophomore and All-American Lacrosse player) was murdered walking home on a Saturday night in New Haven. From the ashes of that tragedy, he showed his greatest strength: courage and resilience in holding his family together after this senseless and unfathomable act. He sat through two murder trials trying to stitch together the why, while diligently dissecting every fact to seek justice in a whimsical legal and jury system. He testified in front of Congress in 1991 in an emotional plea to pass the Brady Bill for gun control. Most importantly, and throughout it all, he was a kind and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and brother to all of us who loved him so much. A man raised in the 1950s who saw unimaginable joy and sorrow, he never lost his steady, patient, understated ways nor his love of family and was above all a moral man. With his wife Sally, they went on to have five grandchildren who all adored him and who brought him his greatest joy - whether playing tennis with his granddaughters, watching their sports, concerts, plays or just having a laugh from his constant teasing. He even lived to see his granddaughter follow his footsteps and matriculate at Yale. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Sally, he is survived by two children, Jackie Prince Roberts (Carter) of Chevy Chase, MD, and Edward Prince Jr (Leland), of Georgetown, five grandchildren Christian Roberts, Avery Prince, Haley Prince, Eliza Roberts and Street Roberts, his brother Gregory Prince Jr. (Toni), stepmother Cynthia Prince, step siblings Sallie Barker (Steve) and Borden Ayres (Mary) and many nieces and nephews.. A memorial service is being planned for Saturday, May 19. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be sent to Yale University/Christian Prince Memorial Scholarship Fund.
