MURPHY STEVEN FRANCIS XAVIER MURPHY Steven Francis Xavier Murphy, a long-time technology industry leader and investor, died on September 20, 2018, in Washington, D.C. at the age of 60. Born in La Jolla, California to Major General Dennis J. Murphy, USMC Ret. and Dorothy Madden Murphy, Steven spent his formative years in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from Mount Saint Mary's University with B.S. degrees in both Finance and Accounting. While in college, Steven married the love of his life, Lise Ashley Murphy. The family they made together became Steven's primary focus and the driving force behind his many business successes. Steven was an accomplished and visionary business leader, entrepreneur, and innovator. Most recently, he served as Executive Chairman and CEO of Vipre Security, where he oversaw the growth and profitability of the industry's leading malware and anti-virus solution and its successful sale to j2 Global. Prior to that, he led Metalogix, a leading cloud migration and content management firm, from its startup phase to its successful sale to Permira Private Equity Partners in 2014. Metalogix won several market leading client support awards and was twice named to the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S. Prior to joining Metalogix, Steven was Chairman and CEO of SOFTEK, where he led a management buyout of the division from Fujitsu Ltd. and later negotiated its sale to IBM's Data Mobility Division, where he then served as President. Earlier in his career, Steven served as the global CEO for Fujitsu Software Inc. and its predecessor, Amdahl Corporation. He also held executive positions with Anderson Consulting, Dunn & Bradstreet Software, ObjectStar International, and Plasmon Holdings, Inc. In addition, he served on the boards of institutions ranging from Mount Saint Mary's University to the Information Technology Association of America. Steven was a national award winner of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Highly charismatic and larger than life, Steven's presence always filled the room with fun and excitement. As a consummate athlete, he enjoyed a wide variety of sports including golf, basketball, sailing, polo, tennis, and bird hunting. Most of all, however, he enjoyed endless games of chase with his children and, later, his grandchildren. As athletic as he was, Steven was equally intellectually curious and never failed to astonish his family and friends with his breadth of knowledge on varying topics including religion, politics, and the arts. Although he enjoyed traveling extensively around the world, his favorite destinations were the family farm in Virginia and villa in Jamaica. Steven became an Eagle Scout at the age of 14, and his sense of service stayed with him the rest of his life. A mentor to countless, Steven always found time to advise and assist anyone who asked him. Together with his wife, he had a long history of philanthropic involvement. Despite his many accomplishments, Steven always remained a humble and giving man. Above all else, Steven was a devoted, generous, and beloved family man and friend. Survivors include his wife of 41 years; their two children, Ashley Murphy Sands (Dean) and William S.L. Murphy (Elena); three grandchildren, Tuck, Christian, and Lily Sands; his parents; his siblings, Grace Murphy Flaherty (Jack) and Brian P. Murphy; his brother-in-law Thomas W. Ashley (Elizabeth); and friends too numerous to list. A memorial service will be held on October 13 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. at 2:00pm. A private interment will follow.
