I remember Lonnie Perrin from Douglas Road SE. He was just starting out in Pro-football and we were sooooo proud of him! His mom used to babysit my daughter, Patrice Feemster. He will be deeply missed along with his Mom Ms. Brown. Please accept our Condolences from the Feemster family. Carolyn (Candy), Benita, Rosa (our Mom), Roman (Soup Bone). We always loved the Brown family. They were one of the best families in the neighborhood! RIP Lonnie.

I met Lonnie (1967/68) through Joe Dean, who became a great coach at Dunbar (Joe was also a great neighbor). Joe, as well as myself, lived in Glenarden, Maryland at the time. Joe was a great mentor and set an outstanding example for young men to follow. Joe spent a lot of time with Lonnie.
What I always respected about Lonnie was his humility. Sure, he was a great athlete but that fails in comparison to the humble man he was. Lonnie always appeared to be a quiet, but kind, reserved, but confident and happy. If he had a problem (iike we all do) you would never know it. I knew Lonnie for a few years and had no idea that he played ball until one day in 1969 we (Duval High School) scrimmaged Tech. That particular Tech team is "arguably" the best ever in D.C. Both teams were warming up and I saw Lonnie.
I remember saying to him, "Man! I didn't know you hooped!" Lonnie just smiled. AND, as humble as he was, the dude had the nerve to be GOOD!
Later in life I met Lonnie's Brother Robert at 1st Baptist Church of Glenarden. To make an already long story short, Robert and I are Brothers. I met their Mother and what Great souls they all were. My heart grieves with the entire family.
I'm proud and greatful to know and have known Robert and Lonnie's
Family. Truly a gift to me.

Lonnie was the most humble superstar that I ever had the pleasure to meet. LP was the most dominant athlete in the interhigh in 1971. We all admired the friendly giant at Tech and there was no one in the city that that didn't respect his talent. I was so happy that he got a chance to play with the Home team (Redskins) before he ended his career. Condolences to his family. We lost a great one. Would love to see his picture on Ben's Chili Bowl's wall. He deserves it.

LONNIE S. PERRIN
Lonnie was the son and grandson of the Norfolk VA, Tide Water area. It was said that he followed in the footsteps of his father and uncles with his superior athleticism.
He was a once in a generation talented athlete that excelled in several sports.
He got his early athletic foundation and training from the highly respected teacher and late coach, Mr. Jake Mathews at the J. O. Wilson Elementary School and Recreation Center in Northeast Washington, just off the H Street corridor.
He played catcher on the baseball team and dared any other player to attempt to steal second base on him. He also played basketball and football and was better than most other kids in the near northeast neighborhood.
His real athletic prowess and legendary play began to rise in Kenilworth, North East and Roper Jr. High School. He played basketball for the late Joe Dean Davidson (Dunbar High School Coach and another Tide Water Virginia good athlete).
People said at the time Lonnie remined them of bask9etball great Oscar Robertson with his strength and in football of Jim Brown with his raw power. In baseball Josh Gibson comes to mind.
He was recruited by several high schools but choose McKinley Technical High School to play football under the legendary coach, Ed Brooks and coach Harry Hart. Lonnie led McKinley to the championship.
In basketball under the legendary late coach, McKinley Armstrong he led the Tech Trainers to much success.
In baseball he was a catcher and pitcher too and led coach Briscoe and McKinley Technical High School to a winning season.
Since Lonnie was an outstanding player in all three sports he was recruited heavily by several major universities around the country. Woody Hayes of Ohio State wanted him because he fit the mold of Jim Brown the greatest running back ever.
After being recruited by Bobby Mitchell, of the Washington Football Team for his alma mater, Lonnie chose to attend the University of Illinois. He was an outstanding running back and field goal kicker.
He was drafted by the Denver Broncos, playing running back and field goal kicker (He made a few 50 yarders and Played in the Super Bowl.)
He played a stint with the Chicago Bears and the Washington Football Team.
After football he returned to his community and served as a Roving Leader in the Recreation Department, where he got his start from.
Lonnie Perrin was one of the great all-around athletes that came out of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area.
He was a gentle giant and really great friend.
He will always be remembered.
May our African Creator bless his family and keep his soul.
Lonnie, please rest in peace.

To the Perrin Family,
I met Lonnie in the late 60s and he visited our home often. I also visited him in Champaign, lll to watch him play with the "Fightin Illini!".
Lonnie had a smile that lit up the universe. Quiet, congenial and a true man of honor was adored by many. I would see him later again at another football game in Tampa, FL, this time as an NFL player.
I can still see that radiating smile when I yelled, "Go, Lonnie!" as he looked up into the stands!
Karen, my heartfelt prayers go out to you and this beautiful family. I pray that God will forgive Lonnie's sins and reward him richly for the Best of his Good Deeds. May God bless the Homegoing Celebration today as a testament to his love for the Lord. Comfort will come, wait on the Lord!

My husband and I were shocked and very saddened to learn that the Holy Spirit descended and suddenly escorted Lonnie Perrin, Sr. from his home on earth to his new residence in Heaven.
As we reflect over the 26 plus years we knew him and the life he led we were witness to the facts that he was the epitome of all things good, decent and kind; he was a loving and doting husband, father, grandfather and son.
Lonnie was well loved, appreciated and respected in the DMV and beyond. The lives of scores have been positively impacted by his extraordinary presence on earth.
Even though we physically cannot be with his wife Karen, his children, grandchildren, siblings and the rest of the family to help celebrate and honor his life we pray that the Holy Spirit would encircle each of you and be present to you during each moment of this difficult journey and always.
Extending our greatest sympathies.
Love,
Myrtis & Donny Lewis

Lonnie was the big brother that I always wanted. He was a positive role model. We grew up in the same area in DC. Lonnie was legendary, he nicknamed me "Chicken Man", I always wanted to stop at KFC between summer practice at McKinley. He was shy, unassuming and humble. Lonnie was a scholar in addition to being an athelete. I recall a story that he would play B Ball with his helmet on the courts in Kenilworth. I never heard a negative word about him. And I would have, that's why I embraced LP. To his family, and it does not surprise me the size, LP was a family man, clearly, know that he was a positive spirit. How can anyone say that about a guy that you barely know? I have stitches from trying to tackle him. He was a leader. BBall coach messed with Lonnie, something about sneakers, suspended him from the team, I went to a game with LP during the suspension, we had to fight our way out because the other team, knew that his presence was inspirational. The student body at Tech protested and the legendary coach had to bring him back. I recall his talking about visits to colleges that were recruiting him. His heart is documented in the NFL. But, I post for my kids, and his, I had other heroes, I was not a close friend, but I knew good when I saw it. I look forward to talking "smack" with him. Family, I know that it will be hard not to see his smile. It's the Natural Order. Your Dad, Uncle, Grand Dad, will not be forgotten.
