Jabez Langley Obituary
JABEZ AYODELE LANGLEY "Ayo"
Professor at Howard University, Department of African Studies and author of Pan-Africanism and Nationalism in West Africa, 1900-1945, died on June 10, 2007 at Holy Cross Hosptial, Silver Spring, MD.
Dr. Langley was born in Banjul (formerly Bathurst) in the Gambia, West Africa, March 18, 1943. He graduated magna cum laude in 1965 from the University of Wales, Swansea, UK and received his Doctorate degree from the University
of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 1968, where he also lectured. He joined the Gambian Civil Service in 1971 and served for 17 years, which included a diplomatic posting in Nigeria. He rose to the highest rank as the Chief of Staff to President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara. In 1988, Dr. Langley was Executive Director for Africa with the World Bank and represented 22 countires in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Langley was widely respected as an authority on Pan-Africanism. He is also the author of Idealogies of Liberation in Black Africa, 1956-1970. He was among the first research fellows at Howard University's Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center. He taught at Howard University in both the History Department and the Department of African Studies. Dr. Langley was also a consultant to the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Dr. Langley is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mary Clarette Mignon Langley; siblings, Sally Camara, Kwaku Krispin Langley, Faith Langley-Jobe, Princess Langley, Muriel Langley, Joy Langley-Signyan, Pamela Langley-Cessay, Olga Langley, Constance Langley and Kenneth Langley; step-mother, Mrs. Rebecca K. Langley; cousins, nieces, nephews and a large extended family.
Funeral will take place in Banjul, Gambia.
