HOFFMAN, HUBERT N., SR.

He was born February 26, 1920 in Washington, D.C. died of prostate cancer at his home in Arlington, VA on June 15, 2002.

He was orphaned at the age of 16 in 1936, when his only living relative, his sister, died during child birth. He supported himself by being a route salesman selling bakery products for Holmes Bakery. He entered the Army Air Corps, signing up for OCS, and rose to rank of captain in World War II. After the service, he opened a dry cleaning business in Washington, D.C. for a number of years. Then went to work for New York Life Insurance as an agent and lead the entire company in sales for seven years and was president of their "Top Club" in 1951. Coupled with his insurance career during the 1950's and 1960's, he also raised cattle on a 1500 acre farm in Orange County, VA.

In 1958, he bought 70 acres of swamp land in Alexandria, VA which is now part of the Alexandria Eisenhower Valley and was the primary developer of the two Hoffman Buildings and the Eisenhower Avenue Holiday Inn.

In the 1960's and 1970's, he also built and operated five radio stations. He was a member of the Washington Golf and Country Club in Arlington, VA, the Royal Palm Country Club in Boca Raton, FL and Lago Mar in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Mr. Hoffman provided major financial support to a number of community-based organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Peggy Hoffman, five children Hubert N. (Jay) Hoffman, III, Nancy Connor, Holly Nolting, Thomas N. Hoffman and Timothy Hoffman; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A complaint and more than satisfactory conclusion gave me the one and only opportunity to meet with Mr. Hoffman. He was appreciative and gracious. In a very limited time it was easy notice that he had a wonderful “presence” about him and an eloquent use of words.

My warmest regard to Mrs. Hoffman and children in this difficult time. My prayers are with you and may God place His comfort within your heart.
