WILLIAM TAYLOR Obituary

TAYLOR WILLIAM LEE TAYLOR "Bill" (Age 85) Of McLean, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, surrounded by his family. Bill was born in Washington, DC on April 5, 1934. He met the center of his life, Jane Lee Downs, at 16 years old at the high school sorority club. After graduating from University of Maryland, they married on December 21, 1956. They spent the next 63 years together, raising their two children, traveling the world (while always living in the DC area), working hard, and helping those who needed help within and outside of their family. Everyone was welcome into Bill and Jane Lee's lives and quickly became like family, making their life full of love and happy times. Bill was the calm center of his family, finding his greatest happiness in his family and his pugs. After passing the CPA exam, Bill worked at Price Waterhouse, before he joined the Inter-American Development Bank, rising to Auditor General at that institution. He loved his career and hard work. He was a leader at the Institute of Internal Auditors, and worked to build respect for the profession of internal auditing. He also co-authored an influential book on international internal auditing standards, A Global Summary of the Common Body of Knowledge. Bill was a kind, strong, and most caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a mentor to many, offering counsel and wisdom. He was an organizer, a planner, and always a leader, lending his talents to organizations from international professional organizations and businesses to his childrens' PTA and the youth fife and drum corps, The Patriots of Northern Virginia. He was a role model in his treatment of others. Bill is survived by his wife, Jane Lee Taylor; their children, Jane Caroline Kilgore (Scott) and Timothy William Taylor (Tamae); grandchildren, Katie Kilgore and Chris Kilgore (Raquel) and his step-granddaughter, Mayu. He is also survived by his nephew, Matt Taylor (Tracy) and niece Amy Taylor-Bannon (John) and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Clary (Pete); his father, William Leonard Taylor (Eleanor) and his brother, Robert Lee Taylor. Family and friends are also invited to celebrate Bill's life with the family at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA on Friday, February 7, 2020 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 11 a.m. at National Funeral Home. A graveside service will immediately follow at National Memorial Park. Bill loved the littlest of us the best. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage you to contribute to the medical care of children by donating, in Bill's name, to St. Jude's Research Hospital (http://giftfunds.stjude.org/billtaylor) and Shriners Hospitals for Children (in memory of Bill Taylor). A great loss. What a wonderful man Bill was. A leader, a mentor and a super human being. I met him in Dubai, UAE in early 1996, when the Dubai Chapter of the IIA was formed. He was the IIA Chairman in that year and had personally come all the way to Dubai to give us our Chapter formation documents! He was my role model and mentor My condolences to the family.

Over the years I saw Bill and Jane Lee at many IIA events. He was such a friend to me that he attended my Father-in-Law's funeral at Washington National on a Monday morning when Bill was at the peak of his career. When I said he shouldn't have left work for me, Bill said, "Work isn't important. Family is important. Life is important. You are important." He said it, and he lived it, and we are all better because of him. I will miss Bill and send my greatest condolences to Jane Lee and the family.

Bill was a great man! As a young leader I learned a lot from Bill's pragmatic approach. Hedwig and I also enjoyed spending time together with Bill and Jane Lee in Greece.
My sincere condolences to Jane Lee and the entire family. Be strong.

Memories of Bill Taylor, a very dear friend

I was so very sorry to hear the news about Bill Taylor's passing. I considered him a very dear friend, an amazing role model and mentor. He was a real contributor not only to The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) but to our profession as well. I fondly remember getting to know Bill on a personal level in the 90's when he served on the Executive Committee for The IIA and then as our Chairman of the Board. At that time, I was serving as the Chair of the Academic Relations Committee and then the International Relations Committee. This provided me with so many opportunities to talk with Bill.

Working with Bill over the years was truly a joy and always a tremendous learning opportunity. His wisdom, keen insights, his innate ability to focus on the critical issues and his experience as a professional internal auditor were key elements he brought to all our meetings and conversations. These elements helped me and so many other IIA volunteers formulate our thoughts and perspective on key issues facing our profession.

His Chairman theme Make It Happen (1995-1996) resonated with me throughout my time as a volunteer for The IIA. He always focused on doing what was best for our profession and was willing to share his many talents and time with each volunteer. Even after completing his year as Chairman of the Board, Bill continued to serve our profession in so many ways for so many years.

In addition to being an extraordinary professional internal auditor, he was an amazing individual. His personal qualities and the love he had for his family were attributes that made Bill Stand Out. He had a special way of making everyone he worked with feel special and he always went out of this way to welcome and show his appreciation to all IIA volunteers he worked with.

I called Bill on many occasions to talk about issues our profession was facing to get his perspective. During these many conservations we always shared stories about our family and work experiences. It was such a pleasure getting to know Bill and his loving wife, Jane Lee, over the years. They were a couple who walked hand in hand. Jane Lee was always at his side during IIA events and also had the ability to make everyone feel very special.

I feel so very privileged and blessed to have known Bill Taylor and to be able to call him my friend. I will miss him and will always have a place in my heart for this amazing man. I have lost a dear friend and our profession has lost a giant whose many contributions will be remembered for years to come. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Bill was a GENTLEMAN of the highest order! I met Bill through the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) over 30 years ago. He was always a "cool head" in many tough discussions and helped the IIA move forward with North American and Global initiatives. Jane Lee and Bill were cornerstones to the overall Global IIA and have friends around the world. I will miss his whit and humor as his way of getting the message across without hurting others' feelings and helping to build community feelings around the world. He was truly a wonderful person to know and I will miss him dearly. My love to Jane Lee and his family. One of Marilyn and my fondest memories of Bill and Jane Lee were the many Disney Christmas' we spent sharing hot cocoa at Disney World. It was a good "family" experience with our global friends. Thanks for the memories, Bill! Dave
