Barbara Ullyot Obituary

ULLYOT BARBARA RIEGER (HODSDON) ULLYOT Died June 17, 2009 at Ginger Cove in Annapolis, MD, her home of 13 years, after a two year struggle with lung cancer. Born January 30, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA; married in June 1944 to LT(jg) Richard Spalding Hodsdon, USN, killed on active duty in 1949. From 1954 to 1965, "Bee" worked for the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society; in 1965, she was recruited by the national headquarters of the ACS in Washington, DC to manage its Meetings and Divisional Activities Dept, from which she retired in 1989. In May 1988, Barbara married Dr. Glenn Edgar Ullyot, a renowned research chemist with Smith, Kline & French, who oversaw development of many important medicinal compounds. In 1996, Barbara and Glenn moved to Ginger Cove, a lifecare community in Annapolis. They were active in philanthropy, along with establishing a number of scholarship funds, their other projects included contributions to the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia and civic improvements made in Glenn''s boyhood home in South Dakota. After Glenn''s death in 2002, Barbara served as President and Board member of the Ginger Cove Foundation, and deputy chair for fundraising for the American Chemical Society''s Project SEED Scholarships benefitting students from economically disadvantaged communities. Barbara''s final mission, completed just two days before she died, was helping planning the 65th reunion of the US Naval Academy''s Class of 1945. Barbara is survived by her brothers, Douglas Wright of Oceanside, CA and William Polk Wright of St. Louis, MO; and by her son, Richard Hodsdon of Seattle, WA; daughter-in-law Heather; and two grandsons, Christopher and Anthony; as well as many nephews. All of her family were "special" and all were greatly loved. Memorial services will be held at Ginger Cove at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, following a private interment ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Bee''s name to the ACS Project SEED Scholarship Fund.

Barbara was a very gracious lady, and she & Glenn were wonderful people to work with in the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society. They were generous supporters of ACS and the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and they will always be remembers through the project SEED scholarships that they endowed with ACS. May they both rest in peace!!
