BURTON SQUIRES Obituary


BURTON ELLIOTT SQUIRES, JR.  
Of Cape Elizabeth, ME, died on April 18, 2017. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Squires received his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Pittsburgh and his graduate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Squires was engaged in research on early semiconductor materials at the General Electric Company, and in the spectroscopic study of flames at the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). He became interested in teaching and taught physics at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV, and at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. In 1965, Dr. Squires undertook post-doctoral studies in Computer Science at the University of Illinois. He taught Computer Science at Penn State and was assistant to the director of the Computation Center there until 1979. In the Washington, DC area, Dr. Squires served as software engineering manager on a series of government contracts with various agencies. After his retirement in 1996, he served as an adjunct professor of Computer Systems Management at the University of Maryland.Dr. Squires was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary R. Squires. He is survived by daughters, Katherine Squires Rogers, Emily M. Squires, Elizabeth Squires Nemsick and Marjorie E. Squires; and seven grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at St.Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac, MD, on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 1 p.m.
