CHARLES ZUCKERMAN Obituary

ZUCKERMAN CHARLES ABRAHAM ZUCKERMAN On October 31, 2018, Charles Abraham Zuckerman, loving husband of the late Joyce Marie Zuckerman (nee Becker), passed away in Arlington, Virginia at the Virginia Hospital Center. Charles was survived by his sons David Zuckerman, Mark Zuckerman, and Jonathan Zuckerman; four grandchildren, and his dear companion Brenda Tabor. Born November 28th, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York, Charles was an academic at heart, receiving a PhD in history and producing several scholarly monographs focusing on medieval Europe. Charles subsequently spent the bulk of his working life with the federal government, working in a civilian capacity in procurement for the Air Force and the Department of Defense, and finally for a series of government contractors. Charles left New York as a young man and lived in Arlington for more than 35 years. To his credit, he never abandoned his childhood sports fandom and actively rooted against the local teams. Dan Snyder's disastrous ownership tenure provided him with 20 satisfying years; his lingering rooting interest in the New York Jets, unfortunately, did not. When Charles's wife passed away, he was forced to take on the additional burdens of ensuring his children made it through school and were fed and clothed properly. He deserves enormous credit for this, and ultimately for raising a doctor, a lawyer, and a computer programmer. How he managed to do this while working full-time remains a family mystery; his insomnia may have been of some benefit here. Perhaps needing an outlet for his nurturing side after his children were out of the house, Charles provided a home for a series of abandoned cats who for various reasons were unlikely to be adopted by anyone else. The most recent pair were conspicuous for their poor sanitary habits and aggressive play. But they were charming in their own way. Charles will be remembered by his family for his intelligence, generosity and curiosity. He was a wonderful traveling companion in Europe, a valuable resource for financial or tax-related questions, and an avid political commentator. His sons will miss him terribly. Friends are welcome at a memorial service at 11 a.m. on November 24, 2018 at the Lyon Park Community Center, 414 North Fillmore Street, Arlington, VA 22201. He will be buried the following week at St. Mary's Cemetery in St. Helena, Nebraska, next to his wife. Future visitors to St. Mary's may well wonder what on Earth a Jew is doing buried in that particular cemetery. This is the sort of thing that would have given him a kick. Contributions in Charles's memory are welcome to any of his preferred charities, including Doctors Without Borders and Catholic Relief Services.Contributions in Charles's memory are welcome to any of his preferred charities, including Doctors Without Borders and Catholic Relief Services.

This obituary brought back so many memories. I have always had a special bond with my twin sister's husband. Although he may have married into a huge extended Becker farm Family from Nebraska( a little out side his comfort zone), he became a treasured part of our lives. We enjoyed his visits to Nebraska and our trips to Virginia. We are grateful that he continued to come back for Becker Family Reunions after Joyce's death. Our sympathy goes out to David, Mark & Jon and their families- who are the best memorial any man could have!

So well written, worthy of the intelligent and witty man it is in homage to. A great man who raised some pretty incredible sons, Charles will be missed. But solace can be taken in the incredible life he lived and what an impact he had on so many people. Will forever fondly remember the summer visits to Nebraska (what had to be considered far past the edge of civilization for Charles, but he would always make the most of it) of Charles, Joyce, and my favorite cousins. Words can't ever do full justice to the memory of a loved one, but we know David, Mark, Jon, and all of their loved ones will always have so many relatives that are here for them if needed.
