John Scanlan Obituary



SCANLAN Ambassador JOHN D. SCANLAN December 20, 1927 - November 20, 2007 He was born in Thief River Falls, MN and passed away in Naples, FL. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Anne "Peggy" Scanlan. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Scanlan of Vienna, Virginia; son, Michael Scanlan, currently assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv; daughter, Malia Scanlan, currently living in Fredericksburg, VA and son, John Scanlan of Atlanta, Georgia. A Foreign Service Officer for 35 years, he served as Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1985-89. He spent most of his diplomatic career in Soviet and East European Affairs, including 16 years living and working in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He spoke fluent Russian, Polish and Serbian. Following the Foreign Service, he was employed as Vice President for Eastern Europe of ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From July 1992 to March 1993, while on sabbatical from ICN, he served as foreign affairs adviser to Yugoslav Prime Minister Millan Panic, an American citizen who was the founder and president of ICN. He was also active in non-governmental organizations seeking to help with the post-communist transformation of Eastern Europe. In January 2008 there will be an inurnment service at Arlington National Cemetery followed by a Memorial service in the Washington, DC area. The family requests that any memorial gifts be made out to CLL Global Research Foundation, mailed to Global Research Foundation, c/o Dr . Michael Keating, P.O. Jack was a wonderful boss, diplomat, and friend, and he was a great American. I learned so much from him, and I will always treasure his memory.
